Program Description

New Mexico Junior College offers students a comprehensive, theory-based education, combined with progressive, clinical practicum and hands-on learning in the fields of Barbering, Cosmetology, Esthetics and Manicuring/Pedicuring. The School of Cosmetology Salon and Laboratory, located in the newly renovated McLean Hall, is where students gain the knowledge and skills for state licensure and to be successful in a highly competitive industry. Students attend full-time, Monday through Friday from 8:30am-5:00pm in up-to-date classrooms, laboratories and salon settings, where life-long learning is gained and encouraged. The curriculum meets the standards and requirements of the New Mexico State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology and students learn the methodologies of Pivot Point and Milady through theory lecture, instructor demonstration and hands-on practice. Students receive the practical tools and products for use during classes and an online membership in Pivot Point Lab, where their scope of learning may be accessed 24 hours a day. Sessions are 8-weeks in length and 320 hours of state required clocked-in time.  Ninety percent attendance is required by state board regulation.
