The NMJC Adult Basic Education Program is an amazing program. The moment that I entered into the A.B.E. offices I became part of these wonderful people's lives, was greeted with warmth that filled me with hope for my future. Immediately I felt that the number one priority in this atmosphere to be me. I was not just some number in a list of numbers I am a part of the community. For the patience respect and hope that the staff at A.B.E. give to me every day, I am and always be grateful. Thank you so much for all you do. Adult Education Program

The NMJC Adult Education Program offers morning and evening classes, free of charge. Classes generally run from August to June each year. The program offers classes for High School Equivalent  (HSE):GED®/HiSET® as well as English as a Second Language (ESL). To enroll, all students must attend a registration and orientation. Classes are offered at variety of locations. The NMJC Adult Education Program Office is located at our downtown location, 109 S. Dalmont, Hobbs. The Adult Education program focuses on the following areas:

English as a Second Language (ESL)
Citizenship (when available)
Basic reading, writing, and math
HSE:GED®/HiSET® exam preparation
NEW: NEDP - National External Diploma Program

Upon registering with the program all students will be assessed with the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education). The results of this assessment will determine readiness for the HSE:GED®/HiSET® official test and the most effective course of study to help students achieve their goals. Adult Education Frequently Asked Questions

What is HSE?

HSE means, High School Equivalency, commonly referred to as the GED®. There are two tests approved by the state of New Mexico:
          GED® (computer test only) 
          HiSET® (computer test only) 
Both test are equally recognized for employment and/or college entrance.

What is the cost of attending classes?

The program and services are free to adults. Students 16 or 17 years old, must complete an Under Age Permission form (UPF) Under Age Permission form signed by a parent or guardian. Underage permission forms are located in the program office at our downtown location, 109 S. Dalmont, Hobbs., or by clicking the link above.

How soon can I get my High School Equivalent Certificate:GED®/HiSET®?

Each learner's readiness depends upon: assessment levels, number of years since last academic class, self-preparation, and individual commitment. All students interested in taking their GED® or HiSET® test are encouraged take a TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) to determine assessment levels prior to registering for an official test.

Do I have to go to a HSE:GED®/HiSET® class?

It is highly recommended that students attend HSE classes to increase their chance for success. By enrolling in classes, students have access to qualified and dedicated teachers, a quiet learning environment, and educational material.

Do I have to enroll in Adult Education program to study for or take the official HSE:GED®/HiSET® test?

It is to the students’ advantage to study at one of the learning centers before attempting to take an official tests. Students are encouraged to take the TABE skills test to determine readiness towards their official test. 

Why do I have to retest if I was only gone for a little while?

It depends on how long you were gone and whether or not post-tests were taken. Retesting is required after a 3 month absence.

Where do I go to register for the HSE:GED®/HiSET® Test?

Students may register at least one week prior to the scheduled test in the NMJC AE Department which is located at our downtown location, 109 S. Dalmont, Hobbs. Or call for Testing Dates (575) 492-2630.

Do we need an ID to take the official tests?

Yes, one of the following are accepted: drivers' license, passport, or government-issued ID card.

Who is eligible to take the HSE:GED®/HiSET® test?

Anyone who is 16 years of age or older, who is not enrolled in high school, and provides an appropriate ID. Will passing the HSE:GED®/HiSET® test get me into college?

Yes, HSE:GED®/HiSET® graduates are eligible for college and financial aid, employment, and military service. For more information contact the Adult Education Office, 575-492-2629.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

         English as a Second Language classes assist students in learning to speak, read, and write English.
