Adult Education Program
The NMJC Adult Education Program offers morning and evening classes, free of charge. Classes generally run from August to June each year. The program offers classes for High School Equivalent (HSE): GED®/HiSET® as well as English as a Second Language (ESL). To enroll, all students must attend a registration and orientation. Classes are offered at a variety of locations. The NMJC Adult Education Program Office is located at our downtown location, 109 S. Dalmont, Hobbs. The Adult Education program focuses on the following areas:
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Basic reading, writing, and math
HSE:GED®/HiSET® exam preparation
NEW: NEDP - National External Diploma Program
Upon registering with the program, all students will be assessed with the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education). The results of this assessment will determine readiness for the HSE: GED®/HiSET® official test or the best level to begin an ESL course.

HSE means High School Equivalency, commonly referred to as the GED®. There are two
tests approved by the state of New Mexico:
GED® (computer test only)
HiSET® (computer test only)
Both tests are equally recognized for employment and/or college entrance.
What is ESL?
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes assist students in learning to speak, read, and write English.
To enroll in ESL classes, students must first register with the *Adult Education (AE) office and attend a 2-day orientation. For more information, contact the Adult Education Program Office, 📞 (575) 492-2630. or email adulteducation@nmjc.edu.
What is the cost of attending classes?
The program and services are FREE to adults!
Who is eligible to attend an HSE or ESL class?
Anyone who is 16 years of age or older, who is not enrolled in high school, and who provides an appropriate ID.
*ESL students must be 18 years old or older.
*HSE Students 16 or 17 years old, must complete an Under Age Permission form (UPF)
Under Age Permission form (UPF) signed by a parent or guardian.
