Numerous companies in SE New Mexico are hiring Apprentice Linemen. The training at NMJC provides YOU with the opportunity to start this great career working as a valued member of a team providing electrical power distribution/transmission to maintain and expand our area power needs.
There are numerous opportunities throughout the United States for Licensed Linemen. Apprentice Lineman is the first step in gaining the knowledge and experience to become a Licensed Lineman.
This program consists of classroom training on the New Mexico Junior College campus and field training at the NMJC Lineman Training Ground. Instructors include: experienced linemen, safety professionals, and electrical instructors.

NMJC Lineman Utility Training Program
Program Structure Overview
Phase 1 — ACDC Electrical Foundations (1 Week)
Phase 2 — Lineman Ground & Climbing Training (4 Weeks)
Phase 3 — CDL Training (2 Weeks)
Phase 1 — ACDC Electrical Foundations (Week 1)
Day 1: Program orientation, safety culture, PPE, career pathways
Day 2: Electrical theory basics (AC/DC), hazard recognition
Day 3: Distribution components, grounding, diagrams
Day 4: Tools, equipment use, inspection, handling labs
Day 5: Fall protection, job hazard analysis, safety practical
Phase 2 — Lineman Ground & Climbing Training (Weeks 2–5)
Ground Operations & Rigging
Training yard safety, setup, and procedures
Knots, rigging fundamentals, and load control
Material handling, hardware identification, pole framing basics
Climbing Fundamentals
Climbing gear fitting and inspection
Ascent and descent techniques
Work positioning, transfers, and rescue awareness
Climbing skills evaluation
Pole Top & Construction Skills
Pole top hardware and layout
Elevated work simulations
Conductor methods (demonstration)
Anchors, guying systems, and crew construction simulations
Field Application & Qualification
Phase 3 — CDL Training (Weeks 6–7)
Schedule: Monday–Friday | 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Week 6 — CDL Core Skills
Week 7 — Road & Test Readiness
Final evaluations and test readiness
