Hobbs, NM — Nov. 3, 2025 — New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) proudly participated in the 40th Annual Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Conference, held in Aurora, Colorado. The conference is recognized as one of the most significant gatherings for institutions committed to advancing Hispanic student success in higher education.

HACU’s Annual Conference provides a unique forum for the sharing of information and ideas for the best and most promising practices in higher education at Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Representing NMJC at this year’s event were Valerie Onsurez Gauna, Director of Outreach & Engagement; Deira Fernandez, Recruiter; and Annabel Aguilera, Student Ambassador.

"I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be around such wonderful colleagues and students such as Deira and Annabel. I am especially proud of Annabel for participating in the Student Ambassador program offered by HACU, and Deira for participating in the HACU Women's Leadership Symposium," said Onsurez Gauna.

Fernandez reflected on her experience at the Women’s Leadership Symposium and the broader conference, highlighting the importance of representation and student engagement. "Attending the Women’s Leadership Symposium and the HACU Conference in Aurora was a great reminder of the power of representation. I found there is much more I can do to better support our Hispanic students, but one of the greatest highlights was sharing the experience with our student ambassador, Annabel Aguilera. Watching her confidence, and leadership shine throughout the conference made the trip especially meaningful and affirmed for me why the work we do matters,” said Fernandez.

NMJC is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for its diverse student population. Participation in the HACU National Conference allows the college to remain engaged in national dialogue, strengthen its strategies for student success, and expand opportunities for leadership development among both staff and students.
