Hobbs, NM — New Mexico Junior College & Community Band celebrated the 100th Christmas of beloved long-time band member Mr. Harrold Shaw during the annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 7. Shaw has been a cornerstone of the musical community for decades, was honored with a special recognition presented by NMJC President, Cathy Mitchell in front of a full holiday audience.
Gael Patman Morrow, Director of the Community Band, shared heartfelt admiration for Shaw, saying, “Harrold Shaw is a true inspiration to each of us in the Community Band!”
Jay Patton, NMJC Band member, reflected on decades of connection and musicianship with the Shaw family, “I have known the Shaw's since I was a kid and they lived around the corner. Went to school with the boys, and have enjoyed playing in the community band with Harrold and along with his church choir when they needed a soprano sax. He is loved by all. The Lord put the idea to honor him at our concert and the NMJC staff took the ball and ran with it. Thanks to Valerie and Gael, our director. Thank you to the college president, Cathy Mitchell, for presenting the gift. Harrold is living proof that music is important to life. It keeps the mind sharp, keeps one social when elders in society are shut out. He is a mentor to young musicians.”
Mr. Shaw’s century of Christmases—and his lifelong dedication to community music—were celebrated with warm applause, shared memories, and deep gratitude from fellow musicians, NMJC staff, and community members. His commitment to music continues to serve as an inspiration and a powerful reminder of the role the arts play in strengthening community, connection, and well-being.
