5/7/2008 6:13:39 PM - Hobbs, NM. Two Thunderbird golfers have just moved up in the ranks! Sophomore Bryan Hackenberg of Thornton, Colorado, and freshman James Curry of Northumberton, England, were recently voted to the PING All-Region Team for Region V.
Members of the PING All-Region team are eligible for PING All-America honors. Region teams are selected by Golf Coaches Association of America regional advisory committees, based on their season-long play.

Both Hackenberg and Curry will now be considered for All-America honors, which will be announced following the NCAA Division I Championships. The championships will be conducted May 21-24 on the River Course at the Hampton Cove Golf Club in Huntsville, Alabama.

NMJC Thunderbirds Earn Conference Title

NMJC Thunderbirds Earn Conference Title photo 5/7/2008 6:12:19 PM - Hobbs, NM. A week of rest paid off for the New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds baseball team. On Friday, May 2, 2008, the team beat the Odessa College Wranglers 13-11 in the first game and 11-10 in the second game. Saturday's game was similar with a 8-7 win in the first game and a 5-3 win in the second.

Though the T-birds took four victories over the weekend, it was a close call. The Wranglers are a close second to the T-Birds in pitching ratings. But, both the T-birds' pitchers and hitters were on top of their game, and clinched their place in the upcoming Region V Tournament. The Thunderbirds are scheduled for tournament play on Sunday and Monday, May 11 and 12, at Hays Field on the Lubbock Christian University campus in Lubbock, Texas.

NMJC Gives Back with Project Graduation

NMJC Gives Back with Project Graduation photo 5/5/2008 12:12:41 PM - Hobbs, NM. The Psi Theta Kappa chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at New Mexico Junior College is participating in Project Graduation: Feed a Body, Feed a Mind, an initiative designed to help alleviate hunger and illiteracy in our community.

Graduating students, their guests, NMJC students, faculty, staff and members of the community are asked to bring non-perishable food items or books to any of the campus drop-off sites. There will be a receiving point at both graduation rehearsal on Thursday, May 8, and at Commencement, Friday, May 9. Also, donations can be dropped off at the Cosmetology Department in NMJC's Watson Hall anytime during regular business hours the week of May 5-9.

After graduation, the books and canned goods will be given to the Hobbs Salvation Army, who create gift baskets with the items. Cosmetology Program Coordinator and Project Graduation organizer Maria Vick hopes for canned good donations to top out over 500, but wants to encourage a large contribution of books as well.

The project has been hosted by NMJC at commencement for several years, but as Vick pointed out, more people are involved in putting it together this year and there are more opportunities for people to contribute. "Together," Vick said, "we can make a positive step in the elimination of hunger and illiteracy in Lea County."

A Step In the Right Direction

5/5/2008 - Hobbs, NM. As Hobbs studies its drug problem and grapples with possible solutions, seventy-three area counselors, educators, probation officers and representatives from the Department of Health and the Drug Court recently attended an all-day seminar on methamphetamine (meth) in preparation to work with those struggling with a drug problem. The lecture, held Thursday, May 1, 2008, in New Mexico Junior College's Heidel Hall, was co-sponsored by the Guidance Center of Lea County, Zia Consulting and NMJC's Counseling Office.
