Inspired by an actual firefighter, Fully Involved” was written and researched with the primary purpose of bringing awareness to the public of the growing danger of cancer in the fire service and doing so through an engaging story. Fully Involved is a love story on many levels. It’s not just the touching love story of Andy and Katie, it’s also the story of a firefighter’s love for being a firefighter and being the best at what you do. It’s also a love story between firefighters who work, eat and live side by side 24 hours at a time and grow to become family " a brotherhood.
Katie Garrett is madly in love with her dashing firefighter husband, Andy, who discovers he has cancer caused by on duty exposure to lethal chemicals. Andy, passionately in love with Katie, clumsily tries to protect her by not telling her of his diagnosis. He only succeeds in feeding her deep-seated insecurity, which is reinforced by false innuendos whispered in Katie’s ear by a “friend,” who is trying to convince her Andy is being unfaithful. A mysterious blond compounds the issue.
The officer at Station Two, Lt. Bentley, wages a vendetta against Andy, making Andy determined not to tell anyone and reveal any weakness. Eventually, Andy reveals his illness to Katie and his fellow firefighters, who all rally to his side to help. Andy soldiers through the pain and complications of treatments but dies, leaving a widow paralyzed by her sorrow and unbearable loss. Lt. Bentley reveals the secret jealousy and admiration he had for Andy who is fun-loving but a consummate professional. He and the other firefighters rally to help Katie despite their own loss and grief.
Katie uses her sorrow and unshakeable love for her husband to navigate her way through the treacherous maze of grief and emerges a stronger, more confident woman and a well-spoken advocate for firefighter safety and protection. Years later, Katie discovers the seeds of hope she and Andy planted together in young student, Lucas Matthews, have bloomed. bringing special honor to Andy’s memory. The circle is now complete, and Katie realizes Andy has been with her all along, just as he promised, his love unbroken, faithful and always true.
