Constitution Day Activities Planned
9/8/2010 11:49:10 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College will host a celebration of Constitution Day on Thursday, September 16, at 1:30 p.m. in the Daniels Conference Room in the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center at NMJC.
According to Dr. Patty Emmerich, History and Government professor at NMJC and sponsor for the event, Constitution Day was established as a federal holiday in 2004 and provides an opportunity to remind Americans about the ways in which the U.S. Constitution has shaped history.
At the event, a number of Lea County students will be honored for their literary efforts in conjunction with a countywide Constitution Day project. Other students will be providing musical entertainment. Dr. Yau-Sun Wong, Professor of Music and Director of the NMJC and Community Chorale, will direct student singers Ashleigh Nicolella, Nettie Peters, Stephany Andrews, Jessica Ramirez, Mary Gentry, Cali Johnson, and Reanna Molinaro, as well as student instrumentalists Leslie Herrera (flute), Ali Herrera (saxophone), and Markos Jimenez (percussion). Dr. Wong will serve as pianist throughout the medley of songs from The Sound of Music.
Tables manned by the College Campus Democrats and the College Campus Republicans will also be set up nearby so that students may sign up to join either of the two organizations.
NMJC's Constitution Day Celebration is open to the public and free of charge.
