NMJC Announces Fall Orientation for New Students

8/5/2010 12:36:27 a.m. - Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College will be holding Fall Orientation for new students on Saturday, August 21, from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The event begins with registration in the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center and concludes with lunch in the cafeteria.

According to Dr. Michele Clingman, Dean of Enrollment Management, this year’s Orientation will allow students a number of choices.  “Following a welcome and general orientation session,” said Clingman, “students can choose from a number of break-out sessions that are in line with their particular goals and interests.”

In the break-out sessions, students can choose from such topics as Counseling / ”Surviving the College Experience,” Financial Aid, Library Services, Online Learning / Blackboard Vista, and Tutoring. Clingman said there are even specialized topics such as “Parents’ Session” and “Tackling College at any age.” Students can attend as many sessions as they can fit in, but they must attend a minimum of three.  One session, Technology / Student Email / Banner / Rave Mobile Safety, is required for Orientation credit.

Academic sessions for students will include arts/music, automotive, business / accounting, computer information systems, cosmetology / barbering, early childhood / elementary / secondary education, English, nursing, physical education / athletic training, public safety, science / pre-med, social sciences, and welding. Sessions for international students and veterans will also be offered.  Faculty will be available to assist with degree plans.

Besides learning how to succeed in their upcoming educational endeavors, students will also be able to visit with members of student clubs and organizations and learn about campus life. They will also be treated to a number of games and prizes.  One lucky student will even win a laptop computer.

“Although Orientation is for helping new students get off to a great start, we’re really hoping parents will come as well,” said Clingman. “We want them to understand what their sons and daughters can expect in their college experience.  That way, parents can support their student while partnering with us for the best possible chance for success.  It’s a win-win for everyone.”
