NMJC GM-ASEP Program Celebrates Class of 2009
5/9/2009 9:42:31 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. In honor of the graduates completing New Mexico Junior College's General Motors-ASEP Program, a luncheon was held Friday, May 8, in the Daniels Conference Room on the NMJC campus.
Keynote speaker Scott Smith, Vice President of Watson's Chevrolet-Pontiac-Buick, congratulated the graduates on selecting a profession that is important in the auto industry, especially in today's economy, as people are keeping their cars longer. According to Smith, the need for automotive technicians has remained constant for the last 4-5 years, with openings for approximately 36,000 jobs remaining in the service industry. Smith, whose grandfather, Finn Watson, began the local dealership 65 years ago, explained to the graduates that the key to retaining customers for life is the same today as it was then: "by providing courteous, prompt, and reliable service."
NMJC President Steve McCleery congratulated graduates on the education they received in the college's automotive technology program, calling it "the most dynamic anywhere," since GM constantly updates the curriculum, retrains the instructors on an ongoing basis, and sends advisory groups, who are experts in state-of-the-industry automotive technology, to conduct site visits and analyze and update the entire program as needed. McCleery assured the graduates that the program they had just completed is "the best educational model in the world."
The GM-ASEP graduates, who will receive their Associate in Applied Science degree in Automotive Technology at NMJC's Commencement exercises the evening of May 8, are Cody Breshers of Lubbock, Texas; Cody Collins and Armando Fierro, both of Lovington, New Mexico; Jeffrey Thurlow of Bangor, Maine; and Adrian Valenzuela of Denver City, Texas.
The Goodwrench Leadership Award was presented by GM-ASEP Instructor/Program Coordinator Sam Gilcrease to Jeffrey Thurlow for his outstanding academic record, technical competence, and professionalism on the job at his sponsoring dealership in Bangor, Maine.
This year's sponsoring GM dealerships were Frank Brown Pontiac-GMC-Honda-Isuzu of Lubbock, Texas; Jim Spence Cadillac-GMC-Mitsubishi-Nissan of Hobbs; and Quirk Chevrolet-Cadillac-SAAB of Bangor, Maine.
