NMJC to Offer Free Tuition, Fees for Summer Transitional Courses

3/20/2009 11:56:19 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. Thanks to a measure approved by the New Mexico Junior College Board yesterday, students can jumpstart their educations this summer -- free of charge. For any student taking transitional study courses in English, math, or reading, NMJC will be waiving all tuition and fees.

The courses, which are offered every semester, teach invaluable learning skills, build confidence, and provide additional help for students who are unprepared for traditional college coursework.

The courses, which are offered on the NMJC campus in the Summer I or Summer II sessions, include Developmental Reading, Reading Improvement, Review of English I & II, Basic Mathematics, and Elementary Algebra.

According to Dan Hardin, Vice President for Finance, by waiving tuition and fees for the classes this summer -- which average $142 per class -- students enjoy a dual benefit. "If students who are unprepared take transitional courses this summer, they can begin traditional classes in the fall. And because money is always an issue, this can represent a substantial savings for them. We're trying to ensure that all students receive the jumpstart they need to be successful."
