NMJC PTK Hosts Christmas Party for Lea County Foster Children
12/8/2008 6:36:57 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. On Tuesday, December 2, 2008, approximately 160 children in Lea County were treated to an evening of fun, food, and festivities at the Lea County Event Center, thanks to a New Mexico Junior College student organization.
Members of NMJC's Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society, assisted by volunteers from NMJC's faculty and staff, hosted the event in honor of the County's foster children. To make the evening complete, Santa Claus arrived to preside over the event and distribute gifts to all the good boys and girls.
According to Maria Vick, Coordinator for NMJC's Cosmetology program, who is this year's co-sponsor for PTK along with Professor of Cosmetology Maria McCreesh, the organization annually receives a list of names of Lea County foster children from Child Protective Services prior to the event. This year, more than 150 names were received, and within several days NMJC personnel had spoken for all names on the list. According to Vick, the success of the annual event is due to the committed and generous individuals who assist.
"These kids are so deserving, " she said, "and to get to help make their Christmas a little brighter is something that PTK and NMJC genuinely enjoy doing. It's amazing how everyone enjoys coming together for such a worthwhile event."
PTK holds several events throughout the year in order to sponsor the annual Christmas party, which has been held for the last eight years. According to Vick, there will be other fundraisers, such as a book drive, in which donated books will be sold to a book company that helps fight illiteracy. Other events will be announced in the spring.
