NMJC Community Band Partners with Area Children for Concert
11/13/2008 10:27:24 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. Children from St. Helena School and the Lea County Home School Association will partner with the New Mexico Junior College Community Band for "An Afternoon of Christmas Favorites" on Sunday, November 23, at 3 pm in NMJC's Watson Hall Auditorium.
Comprised of more than 90 performers, the musical extravaganza will highlight the children singers, officially known as the St. Helena School - Lea County Community Children's Choir, as guest performers. NMJC's Ultra-Tsonics, directed by music professor Anne Turner-Tsonis, will also perform.
Songs will include "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "Jingle Bell Rock," "I'll Be Home," "Let it Snow," "A Big Band Christmas," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "A Gospel Christmas," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Christmas is Coming," "A Most Wonderful Christmas," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "The Spirit of Christmas."
According to Dr. Yau-Sun Wong, NMJC music professor and director/conductor of the Community Band, the collaboration serves an important purpose. "This program is designed to address a need in the community by providing an opportunity for children to receive vocal instruction and participate in concert events." Meeting every Tuesday afternoon after school, the choir is free for all children.
Assistant Director for the event is Lori McCulloch of the Home School Association. Sheila Fuentes, St. Helena School Administrator, serves as Advisor; Sharon Sierson of St. Helena School is the Teacher Representative. Lori Perry, Cassie Wier, and Mariah Claiborne are Teaching Assistants.
