New Mexico Junior College is hosting a press conference and reception for the community to meet its new Men’s Head Basketball Coach, Luke Adams, Friday, April 13 at 2:00p.m. in the Daniels Room in the Ben Alexander Student Center.

“We had 150 applicants from around the country for the position,” said Athletic Director Deron Clark. “We wanted someone who would embrace the junior college atmosphere, and had the experience working with student-athletes to mentor them as they eventually transfer to D1 and D2 universities. Luke’s experience, and his well-thought-out plans for the team, made him our number one choice. We are thrilled he agreed to join the Thunderbirds.”

Adams had been at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach for the last year.  Before that he was at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas as assistant coach.

He lettered in basketball, becoming an Academic All-Big 12 honoree at Texas Tech, while majoring in Exercise and Sports Science. He continued his education at Tech, earning his Master of Science in Sports Management.

Adams also starred for the USA Deaf National Team, competing in the Deaflympics in Bulgaria in 2013, helping the team win a bronze medal, while averaging 10 points per game for Team USA. He has been deaf since childhood, and has been wearing cochlear implants since age 11.

Originally from Lubbock, Adams lived in Big Spring, Texas for a while, where his father, Mark Adams, was head coach of Howard College men’s basketball team. Mark Adams is currently Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Texas Tech.
