The New Mexico Junior College women’s track and field team won its first NJCAA national championship in outdoor track and field Saturday and Esther Gitahi was a big part of the procees.

Gitahi won individual national titles in the 5,000-meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She also finished as runner-up in the 1,500-meters.

In the 5,000-meters, Gitahi finished with a time of 17.28.44. The NMJC freshman crushed the competition beating the runner-up by 25 seconds. In the steeplechase, Gitahi ran a 10:35.17. Her time in the steeplechase set a new championship meet record. The Lady Thunderbird dominated the steeplechase like she did the 5,000-meters. Gitahi took first with ease as the runner-up was more than 26 seconds back. While taking second in the 1,500-meters, Gitahi turned in a time of 4:43.85. Monroe’s Susan Ejore won the 1,500 with a time of 4:36.62. By winning the outdoor track title, the Lady T-Birds swept the indoor and outdoor track and field titles for the 2016/2017 school year.
