Families are invited to a free Family Day at Titanic, Saturday, September 24th from 10:00am – 3:00pm at the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame.
Among the many activities for children are creating special origami ships. They can also design postcards to mail, to showcase the fact that the Titanic was a ship carrying mail. The Disney documentary “Ghosts of the Abyss” will be shown at 2pm, depicting filmmaker James Cameron, along with marine experts, as they traveled to the mammoth cruise liner’s final resting spot.
Titanic expert Paul-Henry (P. H.) Nargeolet will speak at 11:00am and 1:00pm, explaining what it was like to travel deep beneath the ocean. Nargeolet has been to the Titanic wreck site more than any living human as leader of the exploration and recovery expeditions.
Visitors will also have free admission to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. Guided tours will be available at 11:00am, 2:00pm and 5:00pm.
“We chose this day, September 24th, for our Family Day because it is also the Smithsonian’s Museum Day Live!,” says Dr. Darrell Beauchamp, director of the Western Heritage Museum. “We have been a participating museum with the Smithsonian for years, and felt their annual celebration on the 24th is a perfect day to showcase Titanic to families.”
