Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Approved

The Board of New Mexico Junior College unanimously approved the hiring of Deron Clark as the new athletic director Monday, une 20th at its board meeting. Clark has been athletic director and baseball coach at Paris Community College in Paris, Texas.
“We had over 50 applications from across the country for the position of athletic director,” says Phillip Roybal, Vice President for Student Services. “We were pleased with the number of qualified applicants, and finally narrowed it down to three candidates. Ultimately the hiring committee unanimously felt that Deron Clark has the experience to bring Thunderbirds athletics to the next level, while making sure the student-athletes get the best education they can.” Clark replaces Jeremy Capo, who is moving to Iowa after two years at NMJC.
The Board also approved Jimmy Durham as head coach of baseball. Durham has coached baseball for 35 years, most recently at San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas, where he was assistant coach for the past 11 seasons. He was assistant coach under NMJC head coach Ray Birmingham from 2001-2005 when the TBirds were National Champions in 2005.
Deron Clark will begin his position as athletic director on July 14th. Jimmy Durham will start at NMJC as head baseball coach on August 15th.

About Deron Clark
Deron Clark has been at Paris Community College for 19 years, where he was athletic director, overseeing eight teams; baseball coach, and division chair for Kinesiology. During his tenure he has coached six All-Americans and 55 All-Conference athletes within the NJCAA Region 14 North Conference, earning one conference title for himself and 10 NJCAA Regional Tournament appearances. Academically, Clark has overseen 14 Academic All-Americans and 35 Academic All-Conference players who have graduated at an 82% rate over his 19 years. Previous to Paris Community College he worked at Texarkana College for 4 years, and San Jacinto College for 3 years. Clark holds a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Arkansas, and a Bachelor’s of Science from John Brown University in Siloam Spring, Arkansas. He and his wife Saundra have two children, both of whom serve in the Army: Katie (26) is an officer in the Corp of Engineers, and Jake (20) is a cadet at USMA at West Point.
About Jimmy Durham
Jimmy Durham will enter his 35th year of coaching baseball when he becomes Head Coach of the Thunderbirds. He comes to NMJC from San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas where he was the assistant baseball coach for the past 11 seasons. During that time, San Jacinto went to the NJCAA World Series seven times and finished as runner up three times. San Jacinto won Conference titles from 2007 - 2013 and 2015 -2016. From 2001 - 2005, Jimmy served as the assistant coach under Ray Birmingham at NMJC when the TBirds won Conference titles in 2002 and 2005, and were NJCAA National Champions in 2005. Prior to NMJC, he served as the assistant coach at Houston Baptist University from 1994 - 2000. Durham played collegiately at Ranger Junior College, Texas from 1978 - 1979, winning the NJCAA National Championship in 1978. He transferred to Lubbock Christian College where he played from 1980 - 1981 playing in two NAIA World Series. Durham earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from Lubbock Christian College in 1982, and a master’s degree in Education from the University of Houston. He has five children: Tyler (26), Maggie (25), Kyle (22), Andrew (20) and AnnaMae (18).
