The New Mexico Junior College women’s basketball team didn’t finish its season the way it wanted, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort, especially from Shaniyah Mitchell. One of four freshmen starting for the Lady Thunderbirds, Mitchell helped lead NMJC to the NJCAA Division I Women’s National Basketball Championship Tournament where the Lady Thunderbirds placed fourth in the nation.

The freshman helped carry the Lady Thunderbirds to victory by scoring eight of her 17 points in the fourth quarter as NMJC beat Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 61-59.
In the quarterfinals, Mitchell was one of three Lady Thunderbirds to finish with double figure scoring. Mitchell had 10 points, all of which came in the second half, and another eight rebounds as NMJC beat Southern Idaho 63-56.
By winning its quarterfinal game, NMJC was guaranteed two more games with a chance to finish as high as national champion and as low as fourth in the nation. Unfortunately for NMJC, the Lady Thunderbirds lost their next two games.
