TBird Basketball to Compete at Region 5 Championships

Both Women’s and Men’s basketball teams at New Mexico Junior College are traveling to Brownwood to compete in the NJCAA Region 5 Basketball Championships.
The Women’s Basketball team secured the number one seed after capturing their 5th consecutive Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) crown by finishing a perfect 14-0, the first time in program history under Head Coach Drew Sanders. They end the regular season 27-2 overall and enter the tournament on a 24 game winning streak. The women’s first tournament game is Thursday, March 3rd at 7pm (central time) against the Temple Leopards who enter the tournament as the fourth seed with a 17-13 record.
The Men’s team finished 3rd in the WJCAC conference under first year Head Coach Brian Lohrey, earning the programs 5th consecutive berth to the regional tournament. The men closed out the season 11-5 in conference, 21-9 overall. Their first game is Wednesday, March 2nd at 5pm (central time) against McLennan who enters the tournament as the second seed with a 26-4 record.
The Region 5 Basketball Championships take place at the Brownwood Coliseum in Brownwood, TX, March 2-5. The top four teams from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference qualified for the regional tournament.
Semi-finals will be Friday, March 4th, with the Championship games for both men and women on Saturday.
