Raffle Raises Money for Student-Athlete Scholarships

1/29/2016 12:17:13 p.m. - Hobbs, NM.

The New Mexico Junior College Booster Club is conducting a $5,000 CASH GIVEAWAY RAFFLE.  This is the Booster Club’s first attempt at a raffle and the goal is to raise $5,000 for student-athlete scholarships by selling tickets for only $20 each.  Only 500 tickets will be sold so the odds are favorable.  First place will win $3,000 while second place will take home $1,500. Third place will win $500.

Proceeds benefit NMJC’s student-athletes by providing scholarships in six sports: men’s and women’s basketball, rodeo, baseball, golf, and track and field.  Over 140 students currently participate in college athletics at NMJC, and many would not be able to attend college without a scholarship.

“Every student-athlete has a story and many have a tremendous need,” says Jeremy Capo, Athletic Director for NMJC.  “Many of these student-athletes would not be able to attend college and earn a degree were it not for the scholarships we are fortunate enough to provide them. Athletics is a vehicle to their education and our top priority, and has far less to do with wins and losses as it does the education of our student-athletes.

“In fact, our work in the classroom was the best we’ve seen in the fall as the department GPA was a 3.13. 68 of these student-athletes obtained a 3.25 GPA or better, with 12 having a perfect 4.0.  We are doing this raffle so more student-athletes have the opportunity to attend college.”

Says Randy Haynes, NMJC sophomore basketball player from Dumfries, Virginia and a scholarship recipient: “I’m very grateful for the scholarship during the year and during the summer. I have been blessed to come here so I can chase my dream of playing Division I Basketball.  I wouldn’t be doing that without the support from the people at New Mexico Junior College.  I’m incredibly grateful and my family is very thankful for what NMJC has done for me, and how it has changed my life.”

Raffle tickets are sold through the Athletic Office at NMJC or at the two remaining home basketball games. The drawing will be Thursday, February 25th during half-time of the men’s last conference home game where the Thunderbirds will compete against the Howard College Hawks.  Winners need not be present to win.
