TBird Basketball Opens This Weekend with Halloween Fun
10/27/2015 2:06:21 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. Thunderbird basketball opens at New Mexico Junior College this weekend with the Fifth Annual Tate Branch Classic, October 30 through November 1, at NMJC’s Caster Activity Center.
Opening night, Friday, October 30th, the first 50 people to the women’s game will receive a free “Red Out Game Day” t-shirt. The game starts at 5:00 p.m. with the women competing against Central Arizona College. At 7:00 p.m. the men will be opposite Trinidad State Junior College.
Saturday night, October 31st, everyone is invited to wear their Halloween costumes to the game. At half-time during the men’s game, the fans will judge the scariest, funniest and best overall for prizes. After the game there is a “trunk or treat” for all the kids which will be located just outside the main entrance to Caster Activity Center. The Women’s team will play Eastern Arizona College at 5:00 p.m., and the men’s team is up against Western Oklahoma State College.
Sunday, November 1, the Tate Branch Classic continues with the women vs Texas Storm at 5:00 p.m., and the Thunderbird men vs New Mexico Military Institute at 7:00 p.m.
The Thunderbird Women’s team has been picked to win the conference this season by the coaches of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Coach Drew Sanders led the team to a 29-4 season a year ago, in which they won their fourth consecutive conference title and second consecutive regional title, while qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament.
The Men’s team has been picked to finish fourth in the WJCAC coaches poll. The team was 23-9, finishing third in 2014-2015, advancing to the semi-finals of the Region 5 tournament. First year head coach Brian Lohrey has three sophomores returning to lead the team this year.
