NMJC Track Team Wins Third Place at Nationals

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico Junior College women's track and field team finished third at the NJCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The Lady Thunderbirds finished with 73 points as a team, finishing only behind South Plains (147.5) and Iowa Central (135).
The 4x400 relay team for NMJC of Tiffany Garcia, Quadaisha Newkirk, Jahneya Mitchell and Cheyenne Hoerr took second with a time of 3 minutes, 44.81 seconds while the 4x800 team of Williams, Newkirk, Mitchell and Silvia Sosa also took second with a time of 9:31.60.
NMJC's 4,000 distance medley relay team of Naomi Tanui, Mapps, Williams and Sosa took third with a time of 12:46.46.
Individually, Micayla Collins took second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.25 meters (Collins also took eighth in the long jump with a mark of 5.51 meters).
NMJC sophomore and Georgia-signee Gleneve Grange took second in the pentathlon and fourth in the shot put (13.87 meters).
Earning points for NMJC was Kayelle Clarke (fourth in the 200 - 23.86), Sosa (fifth in the 1,000 - 3:06.76), Purity Murray (sixth in the 5,000 - 19:28.79), Newkirk (sixth in the 400 - 56.44), Mitchell (sixth in the 600 - 1:36.96), Mayah Edwards (sixth in the 60 - 7.56) and Tanui (eighth in the one mile - 5:27.52).
NMJC begins the outdoor season March 21 at the UTEP Springtime Invitational.
