NMJC Hosts U.S. Constitution Events Monday, September 15
9/11/2014 4:55:17 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College will host its tenth annual Constitution Day event, Monday, September 15, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Daniels Room in the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center. Educational institutions that receive federal aid must, by law, showcase the U.S. Constitution some time during September each year.
The event is organized by Dr. Patty Emmerich, Professor of Government and History at NMJC. She will portray Lady Martha Washington, reminiscing on a number of memories regarding her husband George (who was Presiding Officer of the Constitutional Convention), their family and the country in the late 1700’s. The audience will have the chance to direct questions to Mrs. Washington, also.
“Being the original ‘First Lady’, Martha Washington set precedents and standards for future First Ladies to come,” said Emmerich. “The term ‘First Lady’ wasn’t used at this time. Martha was called ‘Lady Washington’, and she was on the front lines with her husband as a new nation was created. She was a very interesting woman.”
Prizes will be given to NMJC American Government students for the best letters that are addressed to Lady Washington regarding the many changes within the nation and whether those changes require the U.S. Constitution to change as well.
A reception will follow the presentation featuring food reminiscent of the early American History period during President and Mrs. Washington’s time. Two recipe books that have a number of recipes used by Mrs. Washington will be on display. Copies of recipes will be available for those interested.
A full-size replica of the U.S. Constitution will be exhibited. Dr. Yau-Sun Wong and his music students will perform patriotic songs.
This event is open to the public and is free of charge, and is funded by New Mexico Junior College Foundation, along with Student Life Services.
