A Night at the Museum: A Benefit for Isaiah's Kitchen

6/23/2014 3:14:52 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. The Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame, in conjunction with students from the University of New Mexico’s combined BA/MD program, will host a benefit for Isaiah’s Soup Kitchen on Thursday, June 26 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm at the Museum.

The public can see the exhibit “Andy Warhol: Legends from the Cochran Collection” for free.  The BA/MD students will be on hand to accept donations for Isaiah’s Kitchen, a non-profit organization serving the needy of Hobbs with 3,000 hot meals per month.

Evelyn Rising, Director of the Lea County Health Extension Rural Office (HERO) explained, “The UNM BA/MD program is a way to keep our youth from leaving New Mexico to pursue their studies in the medical field.”  During their studies at UNM, Rising noted, the students are required to spend a portion of their summer term in rural communities throughout the state. “During their month in Hobbs, the students not only get the chance to shadow dynamic community doctors, but get to understand what is needed in our small towns.”

Students from around the state who are participating in this summer program chose Isaiah’s Soup Kitchen to highlight the impact of food insecurity and its associated health issues. According to student spokesman Nicole Nesiba, “One in four patrons of Isaiah’s Soup Kitchen have needed to go to the Emergency Room in the past four months. Hosting this benefit is a way for us to draw attention to the importance of a facility like Isaiah’s Soup Kitchen in this community.”

Dr. Darrell Beauchamp, Executive Director of the Western Heritage Museum, said that he was impressed by the student’s dedication and initiative and was happy to assist them with this project. “Many people don’t know that Andy Warhol was a frequent volunteer at soup kitchens in New York.”  To assist in the effort, Beuauchamp added, the Museum admission on Thursday June 26 will be free with all donations going to the students to assist Isaiah’s Soup Kitchen.  “We encourage everyone to come out to the Museum on Thursday to see the current Museum exhibition “Andy Warhol: Legends from the Cochran Collection”, and help the students with this important project.”
