NMJC Foundation Hosts Annual Golf Tournament

5/27/2014 1:01:00 p.m. - Hobbs, NM. On Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8, the New Mexico Junior College Foundation will host the 15th annual NMJC Foundation Golf Championship at Hobbs Country Club.

The golf tournament helps fund scholarships for students and provide financial support for NMJC programs. Over the last four years, scholarships from the tournament have assisted over 100 students in tuition, fees, books or housing.

Shotgun starts are at 8:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, limited to the first 40 teams of 2 people each.  Lunch is provided both days.  Team fees for the 2-person teams are $400, and teams are flighted after the first round.   Saturday begins with a 2-person scramble, and Sunday features a 2-person Best Ball (select drive).  Prizes available for the Longest-Drive and Closest-to-the-Pin.  Mulligans will be available.

The tournament was originally created in memory of Jim Spence, a local car dealer in Hobbs.  When he died in 2000, Janice Spence decided to honor the memory of her late husband by sponsoring a golf tournament to help students at New Mexico Junior College.  Partnering with the NMJC Foundation to create an endowment for scholarships and programs, the endowment has grown to over $664,000, with a portion of the proceeds from each year’s tournament going to the endowment.

Says Tina Kunko, Accountant/Controller for the NMJC Foundation, “This golf tournament helps make a difference in the life of a student who wants a quality education at New Mexico Junior College.  Over the last 15 years of the tournament, hundreds of students have been given the chance to attend NMJC.”

NMJC Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that currently manages over 70 different endowments, annual scholarships and program assistance funds totaling close to $6.8 million.  Over the past 21 years, the Foundation has awarded over $1.7 million in scholarships and work-study to NMJC students.  During the same time, the Foundation has funded over $500,000 in program assistance.

“We had over 190 requests for scholarships for the upcoming 2014-2015 academic year.  Because of the generosity of donors and endowments like the Jim Spence Memorial, we will be able to fund even more students to pursue their dream of a college education,” says Kunko.
