NMJC Coach Ray Birmingham Gets 1,000th Career Win
3/16/2007 11:14:00 a.m. - Hobbs, NM. On Thursday, March 15, NMJC Thunderbird baseball team won two games at the Wooden Bat Tournament against Luna Community College and Cochise Junior College, giving NMJC's Head Baseball Coach Ray Birmingham his 1,000th and 1,001st career wins.
"This has been a personal goal of mine because I grew up in the great and legendary Ralph Tasker land," explains Birmingham. His 1,000th and 1,001st career wins adds to his lengthy list of baseball accomplishments including most recently the 2005 NJCAA National Baseball Championship and the 2005 NJCAA Coach of the Year.
Birmingham played for Hobbs High School from 1971 to 1973. He started his coaching career as the junior varsity coach at Mayfield High School where he earned not only his first career win against Gadsden High School in 1979, but also an additional 215 wins during his tenure there. He returned home to Hobbs in '88 as the head baseball coach for College of the Southwest, adding another 53 wins to his record. In 1990, Birmingham became NMJC's head baseball coach and has earned 733 wins for the Thunderbirds. His career coaching record now stands at 1,001-372.
