Music Events at NMJC
4/25/2014 10:14:43 a.m. - Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College music department will be presenting several upcoming concerts and events in the next two weeks – with something for everyone who loves music. All events are open to the community.
The first concert is Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m. with the NMJC Community Band performing “An Afternoon of Show Tunes”. Popular songs to be performed include “Rock Around the Clock”, “Magnificent Seven”, “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Solamente Una Vez”, “Bond … James Bond”, “Guantanamera”, “Rock, Roll and Remember”, and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.”
Dr. Yau-Sun Wong, NMJC Professor of Music, is Director and Conductor for the concert. “These are tunes we’ve all hummed from watching a movie or TV show. It will bring back memories for much of the audience,” says Dr. Wong. Guest singer for the afternoon is Karen Drake, a local performer who has previously worked with Dr. Wong on Community Band events.
Admission is free for NMJC Students and all children. General admission is $5 or $3 for seniors. The concert will be in Watson Hall on the NMJC Campus.
The next evening Monday, April 28, vocal students from the NMJC Music Department will present their annual recital in Watson Hall Auditorium. The recital begins at 7 p.m. with free admission to the public.
Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m., music students will present their annual Instrumental Recital in Watson Hall, which is also open to the public with free admission. A heavy metal band “Grace the Ocean” will conclude the concert with four original songs. The two leaders of the band are Brandon Robertson and Luis Jimenez.
The final concert is the NMJC Community Chorale, performing “An Evening of Patriotic Songs”, Sunday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. The concert takes place at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 220 W. Avenue I in Lovington. Guest Conductor and Pianist is Shawn Drake. Dr. Wong will be Director/Conductor. Admission is free.
The Chorale will sing songs including “My America”, “United We Stand”, “Our America”, “An American Celebration”, “Instrument of Peace” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. There will also be the “Ultimate Patriotic Sing-Along” at the end for the audience to join in. Some of the songs will be presented again in the July 4th celebration at Marshall Park in Eunice (10:00 am – noon)
