Students Inducted Into Math Honor Society
2/28/2014 9:05:44 a.m. - Hobbs, NM. Seven students at New Mexico Junior College were inducted into Mu Alpha Theta, the national math honor society for two-year colleges, Thursday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the college.
The seven distinguished students are: Katie Creager from Hobbs; Joshua Gutierrez from Lovington; Dakota Johnson from Hobbs, Apiphany Iglesias from Lovington; Claire Rotunno from Lovington; Ashley Sisson from Hobbs; and Matthew K. Vela from Lovington.
To be a member of Mu Alpha Theta, students must have met the requirements of at least a 3.3 GPA overall, and 3.5 GPA in higher level math courses. Shyla McGill, a professor in the NMJC math department and the club sponsor said, “These students have achieved a high level of mathematics understanding and accomplishment. We are very proud to recognize them into this prestigious membership organization.”
Mu Alpha Theta is a national organization that promotes scholarship in and enjoyment of mathematics among junior college students. They are dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in two-year colleges.
