TRiO Programs

TRiO is about Outreach and Opportunity! Emerging from the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, TRiO began with Upward Bound, a program preparing 9th through 12th graders for college. In 1965, as part of the Higher Education Act, the second outreach program, Educational Talent Search, was created to serve students in the 6th through 12th grades. In 1968, Student Support Services became the third in this series of educational opportunity programs, helping college students achieve their educational goals. The term TRiO was coined to describe these federally funded programs, all of which offer services and support to low-income, first-generation, and disabled students.
