Orientation programs at NMJC are designed to help new students begin college successfully. Orientation is required of all degree-seeking and certificate-seeking students, and it is strongly recommended for all other students. The orientation requirement can be fulfilled in one of two ways, ranging from a two hour general information session to a full semester course covering study skills.
Orientation consists of a general session which is offered before each semester begins. NMJC offers a day session and an evening session in the fall and a day session in the spring. At the general session, students will learn valuable information about programs, services and key policies and procedures that can help them succeed at NMJC. Students also have an opportunity to meet with faculty advisors and become familiar with our campus.
If a student is unable to attend one of the orientation sessions, they can watch the video tape of it in the learning lab located on the second floor of the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center.
Freshman Seminar is a more in-depth structured three-credit hour class that meets three hours per week for a semester. The course covers study skills, memory techniques, note taking, how to prepare for tests, time management and an introduction to college policies and student services. Learning skills are practiced and performed in and out of the classroom. Students can enroll for this class in the counseling office or with their advisor. The class is ideal for all beginning students and is required of all new full-time students who test into a developmental English or reading class.
