College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The CLEP is a national challenge examination program that has 6 general examinations
and 32 specific subject area tests. NMJC currently participates in only 23 of
the subject area tests.
A student can challenge the following classes via CLEP at NMJC:
- EN 113 - Composition and Rhetoric
- EN 213C - American Literature I
- EN213A - Survey of British Literature I
- HI 113 - US History to 1877
- HI 123 - US History from 1877
- HI 213 - History of Civilization I
- HI 223 - History of Civilization II
- GO 213 - American Government
- MA 113 - College Algebra
- MA 123 - Trigonometry
- MA 144 - Calculus and Analytic Geometry I
- BI 114 - General Biology
- CH 114A - General Chemistry
- PS 113 - Introduction to Psychology
- PS 223A - Psychology of Lifespan
- SO 213 - General Sociology
- SP 113 - Beginning Spanish I
- SP 123 - Beginning Spanish II
- SP 213 - Intermediate Spanish I
- SP 223 - Intermediate Spanish II
- AC 114 - Principles of Accounting I
- BU 213 - Principles of Management
- BU 223A - Principles of Marketing
- BS 213 - Business Law
- EC 213 - Principles of Economics (macro)
- EC 223 - Principles of Economics (micro)
Credit will not be awarded if:
- The student has received college credit for the same course, or its equivalent,
before he/she took the examination.
- The student received a failing grade for the same course, or its equivalent.
The transcript entry, for the student who passes the CLEP, will show "Credit
By Examination" with a grade of "CR" entered by the name of the
course. There is no grade to be computed into the grade point average. No transcript
entry is made if the examination score is not high enough for credit. The college
will charge the student a $5.00 fee per course when he/she requests the credit(s)
be put on his/her NMJC transcript.
To find out what topics are covered on a test, to take a sample test and to
sign up for a test date, please contact the NMJC Counseling Office. The CLEP
currently costs $60.00 per exam and is administered five to six times a year.
