Powell
Lands Part in "Texas Legacy" Musical
Dexter Powell has a unique summer job. Not only is he getting
paid to do something he enjoys doing, but people from all over
will pay to come see him. He has secured one of the lead parts
in the musical “Texas Legacy” which shows in Palodura
Canyon, Texas.
All of this started approximately two months ago at West Texas
A&M, where he went to audition for a part in the musical.
“After that first audition they sent a lot of people away,
which kind of scared me a little. Then they held a callback and
asked me back to audition again. After that one they sent everyone
home again to wait for another callback ” After two weeks
they called me back to ask me if I wanted a part in the show,”
said Powell enthusiastically.
This is no small part either. “I’ll be on stage the
whole time, with singing parts as well as acting ones,”
says Powell.
Powell says that Professor of Music, Chris Eubank, has been a
great help in getting him prepared for this part. “Practicing
my singing, along with packing up my apartment is really all I
have to do to get ready for this part,” said Powell. He’s
not worried about finding a place to live, because he already
has rented an apartment there. When he gets there on May 11, there
is a contract to sign for his summer work in the musical.
Powell says that he’s been singing since age four, but
has never considered making a career out of it until about two
years ago. “I never thought I was coming to college at all,”
says Powell as he reflects on his first year at NMJC. “I’ve
preformed in two campus musicals – “Dream Girls”
for CSW and the “Mikado” for NMJC – I’m
a campus ambassador and I have a musical career ahead of me.”
This music/vocal performance major says that he doesn’t
want things to slow down for him after he performs in this summer’s
musical in Texas. “I want to go all the way to the top,”
says Powell. With a velvety tenor voice that is sure to soothe
even the gruffest personality, he will likely do just that.
