Activities
In•tra•mu•ral adj - 1. occurring within or
involving members of a single school, college, or institution,
instead of members of or teams from various institutions. That’s
how the Encarta © World English Dictionary defines it, and
the NMJC intramural’s program practically mirrors that definition,
except for one small detail. In most schools, a committee usually
prescribes intramural programs.
Kevia Clarke, Coordinator of Intramurals/Student Activities says,
“We don’t dictate what sporting events happen; we
generally leave it up to the students to decide.” That “break-the-mold”
strategy seems to be working well for NMJC students, because all
of their sporting events have been successful this year.
“Flag football, women’s league volleyball, co-ed
volleyball league and a pool tournament, are some of the events
we have done so far,” says Clarke.
In addition to sponsoring sporting events for the intramural’s
program, she says that the various activities are part of Intramurals/Student
Activities as well. They bring such performances as, Joe and Lefty
Spray Can Artists, Wax Hands, Jurassic Jousting, Chuck Milligan
Hypnotist, NMJC Hot Wing Eating Contest, and more.
“Many students fly to Hobbs and are left on campus with
no transportation,” says Clarke. Knowing that, she urges
students to participate in every activity they find interesting.
“The campus is two or three miles outside of town, so this
is a wonderful way for students to take a break from classes and
do something fun. Besides, it’s all free,” says Clarke.
