Hot-Wing Contest

Contestants gathered in the cafeteria, readied their water and
napkins, then prepared to dig in elbow deep in some juicy hot-wings.
This was the scene for the first hot-wing eating contest at NMJC.
There were a few rules for this contest though.
Contestants had 15 minutes to eat as many hot wings as they could.
They were only allowed to refill their cup of water every five
minutes.
They had to clean their wings down to the bone and hold them up
for judges Bill Morrill, Director of Security, and Regina Organ,
Vice-President for Student Services, to see and approve.
Twelve contestants representing people from student athletes
to the maintenance department were up for this challenge, or so
they thought.
Most of the contestants fared pretty well for their first plate
of 20 wings, because they were only mildly seasoned. As they began
to shovel the next set of 20 into their mouths, contenders quickly
found out that they were about twice as hot. Both water and contestants
didn’t last nearly as long by then. It may have been the
seasoning or that the first set of 20 was enough to fill them.
Either way, when the contest ended, some of the competitor’s
faces displayed smiles, but most displayed somber looks as they
vowed never to do this again. The results were as follows:
Men
First prize - Jason Walker - gift certificate to Chili’s
Second prize Christopher Turnquest - gift certificate to Western
Sizzlin, and David Marin - gift certificate to McGinnis’s.
Women
First prize - Charmaine Bell - gift certificate to Applebee’s
Second prize - Miranda Swarengin - gift certificate to Arby’s,
and Vicki Benavidez - gift certificate to Holidaze.
“I think the student body enjoyed it enough that we would
like to continue doing it each year,” said Lance Caviness,
Director of Student Life.
Therefore, this was probably the first of many hot-wing eating
contests at NMJC. Can you, or someone you know, handle the heat?
