NMJC Students Benefit from the State-of-the-Art Don Whitaker
Automotive Technology Center
The following are highlights of NMJC’s accomplishments
throughout the past year.
NMJC's Cosmetology Recognized Nationally
In the past year, students received several SkillsUSA (VICA) gold
and silver medals at state and national competitions.
NMJC Receives National Automotive Award of Excellence
The Ford ASSET program was the first place winner of the Automotive
Award of Excellence in 2001, and the GM ASEP program was runner
up in 1999.
NMJC Professor Participates in Fulbright Scholar Program
Dr. Sue Bennett, NMJC Professor of English, visited Norway for
one year lecturing and conducting research. She stated, “It
was the most stimulating year of my life.”
Nursing Program Receives Eight Year Accredidation
NMJC has been awarded accredidation by the National League of
Nursing Accrediting Commission for the maximum period of eight
years.
NMJC Impacts Local and State Economy
- Operating budget in excess of 25 million.
- Employs 237 faculty and staff.
- 3,300 students attend NMJC utilizing 4.2 million in financial
aid.
- Institutional capital projects anticipated in excess of 5.9
million.
- State GOB and STB projects in excess of 7.4 million.

Don Whitaker Automotive Technology Center
Collaborative partnerships with Ford Motor Co., General Motors,
and Texas and New Mexico Auto Dealerships, make it possible for
NMJC to provide training in the latest automotive technology.
Latest Technology Enhances Student Learning
NMJC recently installed five “Smart Classrooms.” Each
classroom utilizes the latest technology to facilitate student
learning. By Fall 2003, all NMJC classrooms will be equipped with
"Smart Classroom" technology.
NMJC Best Maintained Campus
Miguel Hidalgo, of the Commission on Higher Education, acknowledged
NMJC as one of the leaders in maintaining campus facilities in
New Mexico.

Assisting Students Beyond the Associate Degree
Coursework for baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees are
offered on the NMJC campus from Eastern New Mexico University
and New Mexico State University
ELIN Partnership Improves Information Access
Through a virtual private network, seven libraries offer patrons
24-hour internet access to electronic resources and over 415,000
books, government documents, audiovisual recordings, and magazines..
Students Earn College Credit While Attending High School
Collaboratively, NMJC and local school districts offer over 15
vocational programs and up to 30 hours in concurrent enrollment
to students in Lea County. This collaborative effort among the
public schools and New Mexico Junior College offers huge savings
to parents and students for the first year of college as well
as providing curriculum that is both challenging and rewarding.
Successful Collaboration Benefits New Mexico
The Joint Administrative Software Initiative (JASI), consisting
of four two-year colleges, was formed to request state funding
for the purchase of administrative software. This software will
assist the institutions in preparing and submitting reports required
by the State of New Mexico. The commonality of the software will
help improve communication and cooperation among state institutions.
