HARRIER REPORT #8
MEET: REGION V CHAMPIONSHIPS
LOCATION: El Paso Community College, El Paso, TX
DATE: Saturday, October 25, 2003
TEAMS PARTICIPATING AND SCORES: 1) SPC – 15; 2)
NMJC – 48; 3) EPCC – 65; 4) SIPI no score (only four runners)
COACH’S COMMENTS:
We ran exceptionally well today! After a down performance last week, the girls
rebounded and put together a strong performance. It helped having Amanda and
Becky back in the roster. Both ladies missed last week due to minor injuries.
Placing three runners in the top ten is very encouraging. The top seven runners
in the conference are All-Conference, and the top seven runners in the region
are All-Region. (SIPI is not in our conference because they are Division III,
but they are counted in regards to the Regional Championship.) Rita and Jasmine
ran well enough to make the All-Conference team and Rita also made the All-Region
team. Last year we had only one All-Conference runner so we are getting better
as a team!
Rita ran a very smart race and moved up steadily throughout the race. Jasmine could have run a little smarter and finished better had she not run the first mile quite as hard as she did. Carmen ran her best race as a Lady T-Bird and is continually improving. She will be a big help at nationals. Amanda only missed one week of training due to her minor injury and ran better than I had expected her to run. If she can put in two good weeks, she should be under 21 at the national meet and place fairly high. Becky had two weeks of no running, losing quite a bit of conditioning, but toughed it out to help our cause today. She should be able to regain her form of a couple weeks ago by the time we run in Lawrence. Vanessa, who has been one of our top five runners all season, has been battling a bad case of shin splints, thus the majority of her training has been confined to the bike. Hopefully she will heal some and continue to be consistent for us. Ashley and Josephina have traded our #7 position all year and continue to improve.
Our next meet is the National Cross Country Championships, which is November 8th in Lawrence, Kansas. Race time is at 11 a.m. With two weeks of hard workouts and rest, we should perform well at the nationals.
