MEET: SPC SUBWAY CLASSIC
LOCATION: South Plains College, Levelland, TX
DATE: Saturday, October 18, 2003
CONDITIONS: Sunny, very little breeze, upper 80’s
THE COURSE: 2 ½ loop flat with a lot of loose dirt/sand
TEAMS PARTICIPATING AND SCORES: 1) SPC – 15; 2) Wayland Baptist – 57; 3) NMJC – 73; 4) SIPI – 75.

COACH’S COMMENTS:
Going into this weekend’s meet, I was hoping to keep our undefeated streak against SIPI intact. Because we would be racing without our #2 & #3 runners (out due to minor injuries), we knew someone was going to have to step up and run well if we were to defeat SIPI. We had two young ladies do exactly that! Rita Ameri recorded her first top fifteen (15) finish and, she came in ten (10) seconds behind our top runner. The other athlete was Josephine Jaramillo. With a mile left to go, a SIPI runner was thirty (30) meters in front of her. Josephine caught up with the runner in the last half mile, and then extended her lead by fifteen (15) seconds at the finish line. If the order of the finish had stayed as it was, we would have tied with SIPI. Josephine ran a great last mile.

We didn’t have our best performance of the season, yet we were very consistent in regards to our pace per mile and performance. I was pleased with the effort of the team and know that we will perform better as the season draws to a close. We have only one more week of tough workouts before we rest for the national meet. Our next race will be the Region V meet held by El Paso Community College this coming weekend, October 25, 2003. Race time for the women is 8:30 a.m.
