NMJC CROSS COUNTRY
HARRIER REPORT #10

December 4 — Hobbs, NM. As our students are preparing for final exams and Christmas Break, I had the privilege of attending the signing of our first athletes for the 2004-05 school terms.

KATELYN SCHWARZ and LORRAINE VILLEGAS of Hobbs High signed their National Letters of Intent to run track and cross country for the Lady T-Birds next year. Both Lorraine and Katelyn have run cross country at Hobbs High School for the last five years, while also competing for the track team in the spring. During the past several seasons of cross-country, Lorraine has been the Eagles’ top runner, with Katelyn close behind. Once the spring track seasons rolled around, they found themselves competing in different events. Katelyn ran the hurdles while Lorraine specialized in the 800 meter. Lorraine placed at the New Mexico State Track Meet in the 800 meter the past two years. Katelyn tried to improve her speed by running the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.

I am excited to be able to recruit local talent. Both Katelyn and Lorraine will provide us depth for next years’ cross-country season and both should also play important roles in their respective track events. Both of these young ladies have the ability to be among my top seven runners in cross country, and the year round training should improve their track times. Lorraine will continue her pursuit to better her 800 meter and mile times. Katelyn will be trained as our first steeple chaser during the 2005 track season. With her aerobic background, her mental and physical toughness, and her hurdling ability, the steeple should be a perfect event for her.
