NMJC Golf Grabs First 2006 Win

March 8 – Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College golf team bagged its first win of the season Tuesday during the second annual Ronnie Black Invitational Golf Tournament.

NMJC Gold posted an 876 on the 54-hole event to take first place. Coming in a close second was Midland College with an 883. New Mexico Military Institute finished with a 930 for third place, while the University of Texas-Brownsville slid into fourth place with a 933.

The tournament, hosted by NMJC, opened Monday at Lovington Country Club and concluded Tuesday at Ocotillo Park Golf Course in Hobbs.

“We played well the first day but not so good in the second round,” Black said at around noon Tuesday, while keeping one eye on his players’ putting practice and the other on Midland College scorecards.

But NMJC held on to its day-one lead, besting Midland by three strokes on the final 18 holes.

Topping the All-Tournament team in a tie for first place was NMJC sophomore Michael Truedsson of Sandagymnasiet, Sweden, shooting 72-73-69 for a 214, and Midland’s Wynand Snyman, who shot 75-65-74.

NMJC freshman Sebastian Gunnarsson, also of Sandagymnasiet, Sweden, was alone in third place on the All-Tournament team. He shot 71-71-74 for a 216. Fourth place drew another tie, this time between Midland’s Eddy Koracevic (69-78-71) and Andrew Ludlow (71-69-78).

The NMJC Red team tallied a 943. Ty Caffey came away with a 221, Ruben Hernandez with a 227, Jacob Stutheit with a 247 and Dustin McMahon managing a 248.

Also on the green were individual players from College of the Southwest. Ryan Sanders finished eight strokes back with a 222. Pete Vasquez posted a 234, and Robert Nagaki finished at 238.

The next action for NMJC golf will be March 12-14 in Aledo, Texas.
