March 28 – Hobbs, NM. New Mexico Junior College golf team captured third place Tuesday at the Omega Chemical/Midland College Invitational.
The Thunderbirds finished eight strokes off tournament winner Odessa College and one shot short of second-place Midland.
NMJC posted 305-304-285 for an 894 during the three-round event. Odessa shot 310-293-283 for an 886, while Midland had 298-303-292 for an 893. McLennan and Paris colleges closed out the top five with a 900 and 910, respectively.
Michael Truedsson, a sophomore from Huskuarna, Sweden, was NMJC’s best individual finisher. He shot 76-77-69 for a 222, putting him at 6-over par.
Knotted at seventh place was freshman Johan Linden from Jonkoping, Sweden, shooting 76-76-71 for a 223. And another tie for 12th place included Sebastian Gunnarsson, another freshman from Jonkoping, who shot 81-74-70 for a 225.
Ruben Hernandez and Matthew Noles also contributed to the third-place team finish and found themselves locked at 25th in player stats, both shooting 233. Hernandez put up an 81-77-75 and Noles a 72-81-80.
Playing individually for NMJC was sophomore Ty Caffery from Seminole with a 235 (79-83-73); freshman Dustin McMahon from Iraan, Texas, with a 238 (77-76-85); freshman Lucas Mannix from Melbourne, Australia, with a 253 (86-85-82); and freshman Jacob Stutheit from Casper, Wyo., with a 258 (85-91-82).
The next action on the schedule for NMJC is the Texas State Junior College Championship April 9-11 in Tyler, Texas.
