Dixie College Golf Invitational in Utah
February 20-22— St. George, UT. “Four or five times a year Dixie College comes to NMJC to play in our tournaments,” said Golf Coach, James Black. So, he thought it was only right that NMJC return the favor by playing on their course. Black went on to say that it was some of the most scenic country, and one of the most beautiful courses he has seen.
Unfortunately, a cold front perched itself over the course, and rainy weather set in with temperatures that didn’t rise above 45. Despite the dreary weather, the teams went out and played. The weather wasn’t the only challenge the teams faced during this invitational tournament. The course itself was difficult and the greens were very fast. “They were actually 12 on a stimpmeter – an instrument for measuring the incline of a green – which is almost US Open speed,” said Black. All in all, Black said that it was a great learning experience for the players.
Teams involved in this invitational tournament were Midland College, New Mexico
Junior College, Dixie State College and New Mexico Military Institute. NMJC
ranked second in the tournament, only three strokes behind first place Midland.
Individually, Troy Coker came in second with a 189, followed by Gareth Jones
and Mikel Martinson who tied for sixth with 194, Robert Fisher placed tenth
with 196 and Ryan Shaver placed fifteenth with an even 200.
