2004-2005 Women's Basketball

Women’s Basketball Team Profile

Team Group photo The New Mexico Junior College Women’s Basketball Team finished the 2003-2004 season with a 25-6 record. That was good enough for a second-place finish in the very difficult Western Junior College Athletic Conference and a berth in the Region V tournament last March. The 2003-2004 squad looks to improve on last season’s finish and continue to add to the winning tradition that has been established at NMJC.

The Lady Thunderbirds return two sophomores from last season, both of whom were key contributors in their inaugural campaign. Angelique Baulding and Alena Batovska look to lead the way for this year’s squad. Baulding, a 5’9 point guard, is a talented all-around player whose greatest asset is her versatility. She has made tremendous progress since she arrived on campus and will be counted on to provide stability and leadership to this year’s team. Batovska, a 5’6 wing, is a very skilled offensive player who has the ability to not only score but create offensive opportunities for her teammates. Her consistency on both ends of the floor will be one of the keys to the success of this year’s squad. The sophomore class is rounded out by transfers Tifini Rodgers, Asha West, and Psyche Butler. Rodgers, a transfer from Hofstra University, is a very talented offensive player who will need to provide a tough, hard-nosed mentality of this year’s perimeter. Butler, a transfer from Texas Christian University, is one of the most explosive players to ever wear a Lady T-Bird uniform and will have an opportunity to have a breakout season for this year’s team.

The freshman class is a diverse and talented group, blending athleticism with fundamentals and savvy. Whitnie Stephenson will look to help solidify this year’s backcourt. Up front, Rebecca Miles, Maggie Smith-Davidson, Meagan Hines, Audrey Wattles, and Haley Cline should provide talent and productivity to the post position.

The key to this season could be how quickly the team blends its talent and finds the necessary chemistry to be successful. The season begins quickly when the Lady Thunderbirds open the season with national power Tyler Junior College, Ranger Junior College, and Chochise Junior College in the Lady T-Bird Classic. The non-conference schedule doesn’t get any easier with contest against defending national champion Trinity Valley Community College and 2003-04 final four participant Central Arizona College. The coaching staff is extremely excited about the upcoming season and anxiously awaits the opening of WJCAC play.
