NMJC Baseball Wins Seven Games during Spring Break
April
3 -- Hobbs, NM. During Spring Break, most college students go somewhere
other than college, but for the NMJC baseball team, it was business as usual
as they played eight games in four days.
They had a 4-game sweep over NMMI in Roswell (Drew Jackson threw a no-hitter
in Game 4), 2-game sweep over McMurry University JV in Abilene, TX and 1-1 split
with Hardin Simmons JV in Abilene, TX.
However, the break seemed to be literal for the Thunderbirds, because for the
second time this year the ball team faced adversity again. “John Henry
Marquardt was injured in a play at the plate, he’s out for the season.
Mitch Goins can’t play against Claredon College this weekend because of
a release rule (he played for CC previously). And Luis Dejesus who is possibly
the best second baseman in NMJC history, had to be released from the team because
excessive absences in a class,” said coach Ray Birmingham.
The odds seemed to be
stacked against the first place thunderbirds for the rest of the season, but
the team has already faced adversity once this year and they keep winning.
