SYLLABUS

- GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION
- COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course develops skills and concepts of algebra for students with little background in algebra. This course includes properties of real numbers, principles of addition and multiplication, solving linear inequalities, problems with two unknowns, graphing linear equations, exponent rules, scientific notation, operations on polynomials, factoring, compound inequalities and solving equalities and inequalities involving absolute value. This course does not fulfill the mathematics requirements for any of the associate degrees. This is a three credit hour course. Prerequisite: TS 113E or an appropriate score on a placement exam.

- COURSE RATIONALE / TRANSFERABILITY
This is a course in beginning algebra and is designed to give students the necessary foundation for success in subsequent algebra courses. This course does not fulfill mathematics requirements and is generally not transferable for credit.

**Note to students**: This class has been “redesigned”. The web-enhanced designation in the schedule means class is held in a computer lab and requires internet access to use the MyMathLab program for course work. In addition, this class is based on a mastery learning model. You may work at your own pace and are encouraged to work through the material as fast as possible. We have built in various incentives for you to quickly progress through the course. Read all the information below carefully. - REQUIRED / SUGGESTED COURSE MATERIALS

IF you are taking Elementary Algebra for the FIRST TIME, purchase Developmental Mathematics, D. Franklin Wright, Hawkes Learning Systems (Textbook with courseware access 13 digit ISBN: 978-1-932628-84-5)

2. IF you took Basic Math at NMJC during the spring 2016 semester, DO NOT purchase anything!

3. IF you took Elementary Algebra at NMJC during the spring 2016 semester, CHECK WITH YOUR INSTRUCTOR before purchasing materials.

Note: Hawkes courseware comes with an automatic free trial period of 28 days. It is safe to wait until you have attended class for the first time before purchasing any materials.

- GRADING POLICY
Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

90 - 100% = A 80 - 89% = B 70 - 79% = C 60 - 69% = D 0 - 59% = F

**HOMEWORK 10%****CHAPTER TEST 30%****ASSESSMENTS 60%****HOMEWORK 10%:**· Due dates for homework are set in the Hawkes courseware system. You may view the deadline by accessing Hawkes from the module in Canvas.

· Your grade will be posted as a zero if it is not complete at the time grades are updated between Hawkes and Canvas, but you may access assignments after a due date has passed.

· Minimum score of 80% on all HW assignments. Prerequisite settings apply. You cannot skip any assignments because subsequent lessons will not open. Homework’s related to assessments must be completed before grades will recorded and counted for any of the three assessments. Failure to complete related homework’s will result in a zero on the assessment related to homework’s left uncompleted.

· Homeworks will be assigned weekly. All assigned homeworks will be due Sunday by 11:59pm. Late penalties will apply to any assignments submitted past this time.

· You must attend class to understand how to navigate Hawkes.

**CHAPTER TEST 30%:**· Chapter tests are required after chapter homework is complete.

· Minimum score of 80% on all Chapter tests. Prerequisite settings apply.

**ASSESSMENTS 60%:**· Assessments are paper evaluations taken in the testing center or with the instructor.

· There are three assessments over the semester according to progress in course material.

· This class is built on mastery learning, so there is a minimum score attached to the assessments as well. By the end of the course your average for the three assessments must be at least 75%. If your average for assessments is below 75% your instructor will advise you on how to recover your grade, only if time in the semester allows.

- DEPARTMENTAL STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Elementary Algebra (TS113F) is designed to provide students with the basic algebra needed for further college-level mathematics courses.

The course content of Elementary Algebra (TS113F) supports New Mexico Junior College's mission of promoting success through learning by encouraging students to accomplish the following:

· Graph various types of functions.

· Solve various types of equations.

· Use the necessary notation for each topic including showing work for sequences of simplifying expressions.

· Set up and solve various types of application problems.

· Apply each of the above skills as part of the critical thinking and problem solving process.

- SPECIFIC COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
A student who successfully completes Elementary Algebra should be able to:

• Add, subtract, multiply and divide real numbers.

• Simplify numerical expressions using the properties of real numbers combined with the order of operations.

• Determine the difference between an expression and an equation.

• Solve linear equations.

• Graph linear equations.

• Find the equations of lines given necessary details.

• Solve application problems involving linear equations.

• Solve application problems involving ratios, proportions, and percents.

• Solve absolute value equations and inequalities.

• Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials.

• Simplify algebraic expressions using the rules of exponents.

• Factor polynomials.

• Solve quadratic equations using the zero product property.

• Solve application problems involving quadratic equations.

- ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This class is designed to give students the opportunity to make the most of class time. As your instructor I am committed to helping you LEARN! To help get you started all the course work is ready immediately you never have to wait for assignments and you know exactly what you have to do. I will not add to what you see in the course outline. Beyond this, I will be available during class and in my office to assist you. However, learning can only happen if you invest the necessary time and effort. You are expected to be motivated, responsible for doing the work and willing to spend the time it takes to be successful. You must be in class/lab for quality work time, seek help when needed and work independently at home. I am ready to do my part, please do your part. This will take consistent effort ALL semester! Here are some helpful things to know:

Resources for Assistance (tutoring):

1. Attend extra lab time to work with an instructor.

2. Use Brainfuse or request a personal tutor. Brainfuse is an online tutoring service, click here to check out Brainfuse. Personal tutors are available by contacting the coordinator of NMJC Academic Success Center. The Academic Success Center is located in room 121 Mansur Hall.

3. DO NOT DROP! Get help and keep working no matter how far behind you might feel. Slow progress is better than no progress. (IF you really think you need to drop please visit with me to discuss your options.)

Conduct:

1. Computer lab and class time are for MATH only! Do not log into any other site but Course Compass. If you are seen on any other site you will be marked on the sign-in sheet so no lab time is credited for that day.

2. Do not use cell phones or music in the computer lab. Texting or answering calls will result in loss of lab credit for the day. If you cannot focus on MATH during lab time, don’t come!

3. Cheating will not be tolerated. In this class cheating is defined as not doing work yourself online or otherwise. Having too much “help” on course work will not benefit you because you must score at least 75% on the written assessments in the testing center to pass. If you are caught cheating in any way in the testing center you will be given a zero on the assessment with no opportunity to retake it. This will cause you to fail the course and your work for the semester will not count next semester. You will start from the beginning, not from where you left off.

Overall Approach to Class:

Work on assignments DAILY! If you only work on math during class time, you will not complete the work by the end of the semester. Try to finish a chapter every two weeks - GENERAL/MISCELLANEOUS

Each student is expected to maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity in online academic and professional matters. The College reserves the right to take disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal, against any student who is found guilty of academic dishonesty or otherwise fails to meet these standards. Attendance is required at every session of each course for which the student is enrolled. When unavoidable circumstances make attendance impossible, students must provide a satisfactory explanation of their absences to their professors. College-sponsored activities are considered excused absences and the appropriate sponsor of those students who will be absent from class will notify professors. Students having absences due to college-sponsored activities will need to make arrangements with the affected classes / professor to take care of required work; however, arrangements for make-ups should be made within a reasonable time frame, usually within one week of the absence. Regarding make-up work, absences due to late registration are considered the same as regular absences.**Cell Phones/Pagers**

All cell phones and pagers must be turned off when the student is participating in any lecture, laboratory, or other learning activity.**Classroom Conduct**

The professor is responsible for maintaining a class environment best suited for effective learning. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to attend the class regularly and to behave in an**appropriate**manner at all times. Disruptive behavior**may**result in the student being removed from the class.**Food and Drink Policy**

Food items and soft drinks may**not**be consumed in NMJC classrooms. Students are also discouraged from bringing food and drink items into the classroom even though these items remain in sealed packaging. Bottled water is permissible.**No Children in the Classroom**

In order to adhere to instructional procedures as well as maintain the safety of children, NMJC’s policy of no children in the classrooms (lecture, lab, etc.) will be followed.**Plagiarism**

Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.**Smoking/Use of Tobacco**

New Mexico Junior College is cognizant of the health hazards associated with smoking / use of tobacco for the smoker, as well as the non-smoker. In an effort to provide a healthy environment for students, employees, and others who may frequent the campus, NMJC prohibits smoking / use of tobacco inside any campus building or facility.**Tutoring Assistance**

Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located in Mansur Hall room 123 and 124.**Withdrawal Policy**

Regular, punctual attendance is required for all classes at NMJC. Although the professor has the right to drop any student who has missed the equivalent of 2 weeks of instruction (based on a 16 week semester) whether it’s a face to face, online, or a hybrid course, it is not guaranteed that the professor will drop the student. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by**5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2017**.
