  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This is a survey of mechanics, electricity/magnetism, and modern physics. The conceptual aspects of physics will be explored, as well as the famous scientists and their theories. A minimum amount of mathematics will be used in the course. Real-world experiments and simple lab experiments will make the concepts clearer to the student. This course is for non-science majors. Concurrent enrollment in PH114C L (laboratory) is required. This is a four-credit hour course.

    This course will fulfill a science lab requirement for non-science majors. Transfers to most four-year colleges and universities. Check with counseling that this course transfers to your major.

  6. GRADING POLICY

    ·  Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

          90 - 100% =  A

          80 -  89%  =  B

          70 -  79%  =  C

          60 -  69%  =  D

          0 -  59%    =  F

    Grading Weights: 

          Attendance  = 4% 
    Homework, Journals, and Discussions  = 18% (Homework = 12%, Journals = 3%, Discussion = 3%)
    6 Hour Exams = 33% 
    Laboratory = 25%
    Final Exam = 20% 
    Total Possible = 100%

    Attendance: A grade is awarded for attendance in this class. Roll will be taken through your logging in the course. This includes the activities done in the class portion and the lab portion.  You will be given a 1 for each attendance session for the class/discussion portion and a 1 for submitting the lab for the session.  A complete attendance into the class portion consists of the following:  1) Submitting the required discussion and journal postings, 2) Submitting the homework assignment for the week.  A complete attendance into the lab portion consists of submitting the week’s lab assignment.  

          Note:  Simply logging in main course or the lab portion of the course will earn you ˝ point for that class or lab portion.  Submission of the assignments (homework or lab) will complete the attendance requirement.  

     

          In the event that you cannot log in to the course and lab to complete the assignments, a legitimate REASON is required: YOU NEED TO SHOW THE INSTRUCTOR AN EXCUSE! Email or phone the instructor with all excuses.  School sponsored activities, illness, and emergencies will not count against attendance, if proper notification from Professor/ Coach/ Doctor/ Parent/ Etc. is given. All unexcused absences will cost you points. Students who have zero (unexcused) absences will be allowed to drop their lowest exam score and replace it with their highest exam score! 



    Homework:  The student will have 2 options for doing the weekly homework.  You will be required to do one of the 2 options each week to get credit for the homework.

    Option 1:  Weekly textbook homework exercise assignments will be given online in Mastering Physics.  Do the required problems for each chapter, as instructed.  To access these you need to sign up to PH114C Introduction to Physics in the Mastering Physics Website.

    To Register for Mastering Physics, please follow these steps.

    1)      Go to http://www.masteringphysics.com

    2)      Select “Student” in the registration area.

    3)      Follow the steps for the registration.

    4)      Enter the Mastering Physics code that came with the text book.

    5)      To enroll in PH114C in Mastering Physics, please enter the code: MPKERANEN49395 to join the class. 

    6)    You will also need an email address.

    7)      The enrollment process should be complete. 

    The course access code for PH114C is: MPKERANEN49395. This is required for your weekly homework assignment of this option. There are different types of questions in each chapter homework. Each assignment will have the exercises in Mastering Physics. 

    Option 2:  Weekly homework exercise assignments will be given online. You are required to do a specified number of each type of exercises from the list shown. There are different types of questions in each end of chapter assignment. Each assignment will specify how many of each type are required from a specified list. 


    Submitting an Assignment:  Submit your assignment file.  This can be performed with the following steps. 

    a.      Save your document in ***.doc or in ***.rtf format. 

    b.      Access the PH114C-Spring 2017 home page. 

    c.       Select “Modules” and click on the homework submission link for that appropriate week. 

    d.      In the “Submission” area, you will see “Submit Assignment” at the upper right side of the page. Click this link. 

    e.       You can upload your document, in the “File Upload” option, or you can copy and paste it in the “Text Entry” option. 

    f.        Click “Submit” at the bottom of the screen to submit your assignment. 


    Note:  Remember that you have to only do one of the two options and not both!

    Journals: Biographical and theory journals will be required for famous scientists as assigned. The format of a journal entry is as follows:

    Title
    A) Biography of the scientist (should deal with physics!)
    B) The most important theory(ies) of the scientist is/are . . . 
    C) How do you think this scientist has impacted our world?

    In addition to this, you are required to submit a comment to another student's response in the journal area.


    Discussion You will be required to submit a response to a discussion question each week. Submit your response in the discussion area. This consists of typing a response on the discussion board under the appropriate topic or week. 

    In addition to this, you are required to submit a comment to another student's response in the discussion area.



    Hour Exams: All exams will be given online. Tests will be given over a two day period. The dates will be announced online in emails, discussion board, and the calendar. Make-up exams will be given only for excused absences with notice.
    * On test days the students will be allowed to use notes on the exam!

          Lab Policies: Laboratory attendance is required. You should logon to the lab portion and do the required lab assignments. You will need to gather the necessary materials for each experiment. The materials can be found around the house or purchased at most department stores.   

    It is recommended that you keep your homework, journals, and quizzes organized in a three-ring binder and have them with you each class session, so that you are prepared to answer questions about the homework, and for use in exam preparation.



    Final Exam: 
    The Final Examination will be an online comprehensive exam with an equal emphasis on the untested and previously tested material. Typically, the PH114C final has 52 multiple choice questions with a time limit of 2 ˝ hours.  

    * You will be allowed to use notes on the Final Exam.

    Attendance Policy and Participation Expectations
    It is expected that you regularly log into class at least three times weekly and check your Canvas mail to ensure you have not missed any changes/updates. Students are expected to complete discussions/quizzes/tests/ assignments before deadlines expire.

    Netiquette
    The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and student behavior within the Canvas course. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to log into the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class and dropped for the semester.     Online Learning Environment
    By participating in an online class, you undertake responsibility for your own progress and time management.

    • Complete assignments according to posted instructions and notes. Do not just glance at an assignment before attempting to complete it (this is likely to result in a poor grade).

    Plagiarism
    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located in Mansur Hall room 123 and 124.

    Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
