  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This course explores the ideas of music in society and its cultural relevance. The course fulfills the Humanities requirement for non-music majors in an associate degree program. The students will discuss the elements of sound and music, and stylistically explore four major periods in Western art and music. This is a three credit hour course.

  4. COURSE RATIONALE / TRANSFERABILITY

    This course is an introduction to various musical styles through extensive listening. Course content includes a survey of Western art music as well as examples of blues, jazz, musical theater, rock, and non-Western music. The course is intended for entry-level college students (either non majors or majors); no prior musical experience is necessary for success in the class.

    This course is a general education course, which will transfer to most New Mexico schools. The student should check on transferability.

    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

    						90 - 100%	=	A
    						80 -  89%	=	B
    						70 -  79%	=	C
    						60 -  69%	=	D
    					 	 0 -  59%	=	F

    Response Time Frames:
    I check my email MWF mornings from 9:30-9:50 and most evenings between 6:00 and 9:00 pm MST.
    Assignment grades are posted on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday evenings.

    All music students should:

    Additionally, music appreciation students should also:

    1. Explore the materials from which all styles of music are built;
    2. Master a common vocabulary for discussion of music of all styles;
    3. Develop skills of aesthetic judgment and critical thinking through music listening;
    4. Integrate the role of music within historical, artistic, and cultural traditions;
    5. Understand the roles that music plays in different cultures;
    6. Grasp the influence of popular and world musics on art music;
    7. Build technological skills related to music and music listening;
    8. Appreciate the creative process of music through interactive study.

  9. SPECIFIC COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The primary objective of this course will be to give the student an understanding of the development of Western Music from the Middle Ages to the present day. In addition, some attention will be given to Jazz and Non-Western Music. The student should be able to understand the major trends in Western music as well as its function in society, while looking at parallels with other fine arts.
    All music students should:
    1. Recognize the value of music to our culture, community, and individual experience.
    2. Learn the development of musicians, performers, music educators, scholars, music business, music therapy, and musicology.
    3. Receive a sound preparation to further study in music education, business and/or performance.
    4. Have opportunities to perform, study, create, and experience music.
    5. Create an artistic environment which fosters the development of personal realizations that are essential to the fabric of a healthy society.

  11. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Online etiquette is mandatory. Daily access to a computer is mandatory. You will have greater success in this course by being patient and polite with your professor and other students.
    For best success follow the modules. Assignments are worth 40% of your final grade. Read the chapter first, observe the power point presentation, observe the lecture notes. Complete the assignments that are based on a 100 point scale. The Rubric for each assignment includes completion of the definitions (20 pts), history of the composers (30 pts), information for the listening assignment (30pts), and your thoughts, at least 5 sentences (20 pts.) Assignments must be less than 50% unoriginal work. Points will be taken off for 60-79% or the assignment will receive a "0" for 80-100% unoriginal work.
    If your work is copied exact from the text or from another student or source, you will receive a "0" for the assignment. If plagiarism continues, you will receive a "0" for the course.
    The student must also submit comments to the "discussion" page for 100 points total credit. Interactive discussions are crucial for online learning.
    One concert report is mandatory for this course. This assignment is worth 10% of the final grade. Attend one live concert/theater production/ballet and follow the criteria given. Give proof of attendance.
    Quiz/test(40% of final grade)-go to the quiz page in the module and complete the quiz within the given time limit.
    Final exam is cumulative and worth 10% of your final grade.

Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, dishonesty in quizzes, tests, or assignments; claiming credit for work not done or done by others; and nondisclosure or misrepresentation in filling out applications or other College records. Cheating or gaining illegal information for any type of graded work is considered dishonest and will be dealt with accordingly.

    Attendance Policy and Participation Expectations
    It is expected that you regularly log into class at least three times weekly and check your Canvas mail to ensure you have not missed any changes/updates. Students are expected to complete discussions/quizzes/tests/ assignments before deadlines expire.

    Netiquette
    The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and student behavior within the Canvas course. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to log into the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class and dropped for the semester.     Plagiarism
    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located in Mansur Hall room 123 and 124.

    Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
