    This course is an introduction to medical terminology with an emphasis on elements of medical terms, standard medical abbreviations, spelling, and an appreciation of the logical method found in medical terminology. This is a one credit hour course.


    ME 111 assist students, who are interested in pursuing a healthcare career, learn basic medical terminology using a systematic approach.

    ME 111 will transfer to most community colleges. Information concerning articulation agreements with regional colleges and universities can be obtained through NMJC's counseling office. It is important to check with the institution to which you are planning to transfer to determine transferability. Planning for course credit transfer is ultimately the student's responsibility. All students are encouraged to keep the course syllabus, as it will help determine the transferability of this course credit to another institution.

    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

    						90 - 100%	=	A
    						80 -  89%	=	B
    						70 -  79%	=	C
    						60 -  69%	=	D
    					 	 0 -  59%	=	F

    Grades earned on chapter exams are available in Canvas immediately after they are submitted. For students to receive credit for any coursework, it must be submitted on or before the last class day. The total points anticipated for Medical Terminology is 755 points, which includes the following:

    Getting Stared Activities (20 points)
    Seven Chapter Exams (100 points each)
    Seven Course Communications (35 points)

    Student may calculate their grade by dividing the number of points earned by the number of points that were possible and multiplying by 100. To receive a passing grade, the student must receive 60% of the total possible points for the course. NMJC's grade scale will be strictly adhered to (e.g. no curve of final grades will occur).

    Getting Started Activities (20 pts)
    1) Syllabus Quiz/Survey (10 pts) - There is a short syllabus quiz/survey that is to be submitted by Wednesday of the first week. It is to be accessed via Respondus Lockdown Browser. The password is "success" without the quote marks.
    2) Discussion (5 pts) - Discussions are public and may be viewed by all students enrolled in the course. Students are to post an introduction via Canvas by Friday of the first week.
    3) Canvas Inbox (5 pts) - Messages are a private type of communication between student and instructor. Students are to send an inbox message via Canvas to the instructor by Friday of the first week.

    Chapter Exams (700 pts):
    Exams are housed in Canvas (see "Modules" Tab) and are to be accessed via Respondus Lockdown Browser. The password is "success" without the quotes marks. Chapter exams contain 50 questions randomly selected from a test-bank weighted 2 points each. They are considered individual and closed book. Tests are timed and must be submitted within the time allotted. Once exams have been successfully submitted, scores are immediately available (see "Grades" Tab). Should a problem arise during the testing process, it is the student's responsibility to report the problem to the professor as soon as possible (within 24 hours).

    Within the "Course Outline" section of the syllabus is the testing schedule. Taking exams earlier than scheduled is encouraged. ALL chapter exams must be submitted by midnight Thursday, October 11, 2018.

    There is an optional comprehensive final that may be submitted. Score earned will be used to replace the lowest test score. The score earned on the final will not negatively impact the students' final course grade.

    Course Communications (35 pts)
    When communicating via Canvas, the highest level of integrity and ethics must be maintained. Seven (7) communications are scheduled. Timing of these scheduled communications is important (see "Course Outline" for dates). Students will be awarded five points for each scheduled communication.

    Students are let the instructor know where they are in their studies (e.g. Chapter 1 read, Test 1 completed, or working on chapter 2). Questions are encouraged but not required to receive points. The instructor will respond to Canvas communications within 24 hours Monday thru Friday 12 noon. Purposes for these communications are as follows:
    1) To keep contact between instructor-student throughout the semester.
    2) To encourage students to stay on task.
    3) To provide a mechanism for feedback between student/instructor.

    4. Acquire a basic foundation in medical terminology that will lead to recognizing thousands of medical terms related to anatomy and physiology, diagnostic tests and procedures, pathology, surgery, and therapy.
    5. Use the pronunciation guide to pronounce medical terms correctly.
    6. Recognize the singular form and plural form of terms.


    Each chapter has specific learning goals stated at the beginning of the chapter. Students that demonstrate an understanding of the learning goals/objectives should be able to achieve a score of 70% or greater on chapter exams.

    Chapter One – Building Medical Terms
    Upon completion of the chapter, students should be able to:
    1. Identify the roles of word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms.
    2. Identify examples of combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes and word roots, and recognize them in medical terms.
    3. Demonstrate correct usage of the combining vowel by correctly joining word parts to write medical terms.
    4. Use the rules learned in this chapter to write the singular or plural forms and to identify eponyms, acronyms, and abbreviations.
    5. Use the rules to pronounce medical terms correctly.
    6. Write the meanings of the word parts and use them to build and analyze terms.
    7. Match the terms for medical specialists with the areas in which they specialize.
    8. Identify the specialty associated with various medical conditions.

    Chapter Two – Diseases and Disorders: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Terms
    Upon completion of the chapter, students should be able to:
    1. List seven general causes of disease.
    2. List four general types of micro-organisms.
    3. Recognize terms associated with diseases and disorders.
    4. Match word parts with their meanings.
    5. Write the meanings of the word parts and use them to build and analyze terms.
    6. Recognize the major causes of death in the US.
    7. Identify the procedures used during physical examination.
    8. Recognize types of diagnostic imaging procedures.
    9. Know surgical and nonsurgical therapeutic terms.

    Chapter Three – Organization of the Body
    Upon completion of the chapter, students should be able to:
    1. Recognize the relationship of cells, tissues, and organs.
    2. Name four main types of tissues.
    3. Match prefixes with their meanings.
    4. Use prefixes to build and analyze terms.
    5. Use a- or an- correctly to write term of negation.
    6. Know the meanings of combining forms for position and direction, and name the related anatomic terms with their meanings.
    7. Understand directional terms and planes of the body.
    8. Know the combining forms used for body regions and body cavities.
    9. Identify the four quadrants and the nine abdominopelvic regions used by anatomist.
    10. Identify terms that relate the body as a whole when given their meaning.

    Chapter Four – Body Fluids
    Upon completion of the chapter, students should be able to:
    1. Recognize general facts about body fluids and analyze associated terms.
    2. Recognize the type of body fluids and kinds of imbalances that affect metabolism.
    3. Name the function of and the principal conditions that affect the formed elements of blood.
    4. Identify different blood pathologies based on description.
    5. Recognize the signs and symptoms of different types of anemia.
    6. Understand terms associated with coagulation.
    7. List several body defense mechanisms.
    8. Define active vs. passive immunity and natural vs. artificial immunity.
    9. Write the meaning of word parts pertaining to body fluids and immunity and use them to build and analyze terms.

    Chapter Five – Circulatory System: Cardiovascular & Lymphatic
    Upon completion of the chapter, students should be able to:
    1. State the meaning of the circulatory system and state its function.
    2. Recognize names of the structures of the cardiovascular system and define terms associated with these structures.
    3. Sequence the flow of blood from when it enters the heart.
    4. Know diagnostic test and procedures used in for assessment of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.
    5. Understand terms associated with the cardiovascular and lymphatic pathologies along with therapeutic interventions.
    6. Write the meaning of word parts pertaining to the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems and use them to build and analyze terms.

    Chapter Six – Respiratory System
    Upon completion of the chapter, students should be able to:
    1. State the function of the respiratory system.
    2. Recognize the structures of the respiratory system and define terms associated with these structures.
    3. Distinguish between the structures associated with the upper respiratory tract and the lower respiratory tract.
    4. Sequence the flow of air from the atmosphere through the respiratory structures.
    5. Identify instruments and procedures used to study respiratory system.
    6. Understand terms associated with respiratory pathologies along with surgical and therapeutic interventions.
    7. Write the meaning of word parts pertaining to the respiratory system and use them to build and analyze terms.

    Chapter Seven – Digestive System
    Upon completion of the chapter, students should be able to:
    1. State the four major functions of the digestive system and analyze associated terms.
    2. List the three classes of nutrients and their functions.
    3. Write the name of the major structures of the digestive system, define the terms associated with these structures.
    4. Write the meanings of the word parts associated with upper and lower digestive tract.
    5. State the function of the accessory organs of digestion and analyze associative terms.
    6. Know diagnostic test and procedures used in for assessment of the digestive system.
    7. Understand terms associated with digestive pathologies along with surgical and therapeutic interventions.
    8. Write the meaning of word parts pertaining to the digestive system and use them to build and analyze terms.

    ME 111 is offered as a first term, eight-week course. Students must complete the bookwork for each chapter prior to taking the exam over that material. There are free online study tools available with your textbook. For registration information, see the front pages of the book.

    Leonard, the textbook’s author, uses the programmed learning method that is a fast and effective means of becoming familiar with medical language and eliminating much of the medium of memorization. It is important to study the chapters in the sequence presented because each chapter builds upon the next (specifically chapters 1 – 4). Students successfully completing ME 111 are encouraged to enroll in ME 121 that is offered as a second term eight-week course and covers chapters 8 - 14.

    The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and student behavior within the Canvas course.     Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.

    Chapter Exams
    Students must complete the bookwork for each chapter prior to taking the exam over that material. If any questions arise during the student’s study, he/she should contact the instructor. Exam due dates in Canvas are "soft" so you can submit quizzes past the deadline without penalty. However, ALL exams must be submitted by Thursday midnight during the final week. Working ahead of projected due dates is encouraged. To help stay on task, suggested dues dates for submission are as follows:
