  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This course will introduce students to print reading, engineering fluid diagrams, electrical diagrams, electronic schematics, logic diagrams, engineering fabrication, and construction drawings. This course should provide personnel and contractors who are associated with energy industry facility construction, operation, and maintenance a foundation in reading, interpreting, and using engineering prints and drawings. This is a three credit hour course.

  4. COURSE RATIONALE / TRANSFERABILITY

    This course will meet the requirements of the Energy Technology Degree at New Mexico Junior College; however, it is important to check with the institution to which you are planning to transfer to determine transferability. All students are encouraged to keep the course syllabus, as it will help determine the transferability of this course credit to another institution.

    Using LockDown Browser and a Webcam for Online Exams

    This course requires the use of LockDown Browser and a webcam for online exams. The webcam can be built into your computer or can be the type that plugs in with a USB cable. Watch this video (http://www.respondus.com/products/lockdown-browser/student-movie.shtml) to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser and the webcam feature.

    Additional information and instructions can be found in the first module of the course.

    You will be required to pay a one-time fee to use the webcam feature of Respondus Lockdown Browser. Once paid, you will be able to use the webcam for the remainder of the course. If you are on scholarship, this fee should be paid from your scholarship funds.

    To take an online test, start LockDown Browser and navigate to the exam. (You won't be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.)     Finally, when taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:
    • Ensure you're in a location where you won't be interrupted
    • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc.
    • Clear your desk of all external materials — books, papers, other computers, or devices
    • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test
    • If a webcam is required, make sure it is plugged in or enabled before starting LockDown Browser
    • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted
    • If a webcam is required, you will be recorded during the test to ensure you're using only permitted resources

  6. GRADING POLICY

    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

    						90 - 100%	=	A
    						80 -  89%	=	B
    						70 -  79%	=	C
    						60 -  69%	=	D
    					 	 0 -  59%	=	F
    

    The breakdown of points is as follows:
    Assignments: 700 points
    Discussions: 350 points
    Quizzes: 1700 points
    Total points: 2750

    This is a fast paced, eight week, accelerated learning course

    Coursework will be graded within 7 days from the due date, if not sooner. Late work will not be accepted.

    Graded Activities

    Discussions and Assignments will be a portion of your course work.

    Discussions-- It is expected that you actively participate and post to at least 1 of your peers posting within each discussion question.

    Assignments-- There will be one or more assignments for each module that we cover. Assignments that are required to be turned in, must be submitted by using the Assignment Drop Box in Canvas.

    Final-- Completion of the final exam is required for completion of the course.

    Please refer to each respective canvas module rubric to know the specific points allocated for each graded assignment.

    Retrieving Grades from T-BirdWeb Portal
    Go to the New Mexico Junior College T-BirdWeb Portal login page. Please enter your User Identification Number (ID), which is your Banner ID, and your Personal Identification Number (PIN). When finished, click Login.

  11. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Email/Inbox Policy
    The preferred way to communicate with the instructor of this class is through Canvas Inbox. On weekdays, email will be answered within 24 hours and in most cases sooner than that. On weekends, email will be answered within 48 hours and in most cases sooner than that. If you have a legitimate emergency call my office phone. It is connected to my cell phone.

    Meetings with the instructor will be held by appointment and/or virtually through the Canvas Conference tool whenever possible. Please inbox the instructor with meeting requests.

    Time Zone
    It is important to note that this course operates on Mountain Standard Time. Students are responsible for adjusting due dates to their time zone.

    Final Quiz
    At the end of the course, the final quiz may require the use of a webcam as well as a sitting fee of $10-$15 to be paid by debit or credit card. Please plan ahead if necessary. The software company that facilitates the monitored quiz charges the fee, not NMJC or the professor.

    Each student is expected to maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity in online academic and professional matters. Cheating or gaining illegal information for any type of graded work is considered dishonest and will be dealt with accordingly.

    Attendance Policy and Participation Expectations
    It is expected that you regularly log into class at least three times weekly and check your Canvas mail to ensure you have not missed any changes/updates. Students are expected to complete discussions/quizzes/tests/ assignments before deadlines expire.

    Netiquette
    The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and student behavior within the Canvas course. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to log into the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class and dropped for the semester.     Plagiarism
    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located in Mansur Hall room 123 and 124.

    Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.

    Module Zero: Getting Started

                Review Course Information and complete “Getting Started” Module Zero.  You cannot move on to Module 1, week 2, unless you have completed Module Zero and reviewed the Course Information.

    Week 2: DOE Handbook Volume 1

             Module 1 - Introduction to Print Reading

    This module introduces each type of drawing and its various formats. It also
    reviews the information contained in the non-drawing areas of a drawing.

    Week 3: DOE Handbook Volume 1

               Module 2 - Engineering Fluid Diagrams and Prints

    This module introduces engineering fluid diagrams and prints (P&IDs); reviews
    the common symbols and conventions used on P&IDs; and provides several
    examples of how to read a P&ID.

             Module 3 - Electrical Diagrams and Schematics

    This module reviews the major symbols and conventions used on electrical
    schematics and single line drawings and provides several examples of reading electrical prints.

            Module 4 - Electronic Diagrams and Schematics

    This module reviews electronic schematics and block diagrams.
    It covers the
    major symbols used and provides several examples of reading these types of
    diagrams.

    Week 7, 8

            Module 5 - Logic Diagrams

    This module introduces the basic symbols and common conventions used on logic
    diagrams. It explains how logic prints are used to represent a component's
    control circuits. Truth tables are also briefly discusses and several examples of
    reading logic diagrams are provided.

            Module 6 - Engineering Fabrication, Construction, and Architectural Drawings
    This module reviews fabrication, construction, and architectural drawings and
    introduces the symbols and conventions used to dimension and tolerance these types of drawings.
