  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    3 Credit Hours This course will introduce students to fundamental radiation detection methods and instruments. Portable and stationary laboratory radiation detection equipment will be reviewed with multiple applications. Prerequisite: MA 113 College Algebra

  4. COURSE RATIONALE / TRANSFERABILITY

    This course will meet the requirements of the Energy Technology Degree at New Mexico Junior College; however, it is important to check with the institution to which you are planning to transfer to determine transferability. All students are encouraged to keep the course syllabus, as it will help determine the transferability of this course credit to another institution.

    Using LockDown Browser and a Webcam for Online Exams

    This course requires the use of LockDown Browser and a webcam for online exams. The webcam can be built into your computer or can be the type that plugs in with a USB cable.     To take an online test, start LockDown Browser and navigate to the exam. (You won't be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.)     Finally, when taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:
    • Ensure you're in a location where you won't be interrupted
    • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc.

    • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test
    • If a webcam is required, make sure it is plugged in or enabled before starting LockDown Browser
    • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted
    • If a webcam is required, you will be recorded during the test to ensure you're using only permitted resources

  6. GRADING POLICY

    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

    						90 - 100%	=	A
    						80 -  89%	=	B
    						70 -  79%	=	C
    						60 -  69%	=	D
    					 	 0 -  59%	=	F
    

    This course is graded on a point system with the final grade based on a percentage as follows:

    80% - Assignments & Online Discussion
    20% - Final Exam

    The objective of the course is to help students understand and apply Radiological Instrumentation principles related to duties performed by Radiological Control Technicians.

    By the end of this course students should be able to:

    o Explain radiation survey instrumentation, contamination monitoring instrumentation
    o Explain air sampling equipment, counting room equipment

    Netiquette
    The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and student behavior within the Canvas course. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to log into the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class and dropped for the semester.     Plagiarism
    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located in Mansur Hall room 123 and 124.

    Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.

    Week 1 - Module 2.16 Radiation Survey Instrumentation

    2.16.01 List the factors which affect an RCT's selection of a portable radiation survey instrument, and identify appropriate instruments for external radiation surveys.

    2.16.02 Identify features and specifications for ion chamber instruments

    2.16.03 Identify features and specifications for high exposure instruments

    2.16.04 Identify features and specifications for neutron detection and measurement instruments


    Week 2 and 3 - Module 2.17 Contamination Monitoring Instrumentation

    2.17.01 List the factors which affects an RCT's selection of a portable contamination monitoring instrument.

    2.17.02 Describe features and specifications for commonly used count rate meter probes used for beta/gamma and/or alpha surveys:

    2.17.03 Describe features and specifications for commonly used count rate instruments used .

    2.17.04 Describe features and specifications for commonly used personnel contamination monitors .

    2.17.05 Describe features and specifications for commonly used contamination monitors (tool, bag, laundry monitors).


    Week 4 and 5 - Module 2.18 Air Sampling Equipment

    2.18.01 Identify the factors that affect the operator's selection of a portable air sampler.

    2.18.02 Identify the physical and operating characteristics and the limitation(s) of the Staplex and Radeco portable air samplers.

    2.18.03 Identify the physical and operating characteristics and the limitation(s) of Motor air pumps.

    2.18.04 List the steps for a preoperational checkout of a portable air sampler.

    2.18.05 Identify the physical and operational characteristics and the limitation(s) of beta-gamma constant air monitors (CAMs).
