  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    The beginning curriculum course places play at the center of curriculum in developmentally appropriate early childhood programs. It addresses content that is relevant for children birth through age four in developmentally and culturally sensitive ways of integrating content into teaching and learning experiences. Information on adapting content areas to meet the needs of children with special needs and the development of Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) is included. Curriculum development in all areas, including literacy, numeracy, the arts, health, science, social skills, and adaptive learning for children, birth through age four, is emphasized. This is a three credit hour course. Corequisite: ED 112A Practicum for Curriculum Development through Play (Birth-Age 4/Pre-K)

  4. COURSE RATIONALE / TRANSFERABILITY

    This course is part of New Mexico Junior College’s education requirements for a Certificate in Early Childhood Education and/or an Associate in Arts degree with emphasis in Early Childhood Education. This course is also a part of the articulated Universal Catalogue of Courses for Early Childhood Education in the State of New Mexico. Please note that if a student intends to transfer to another institution, it is the student’s responsibility to verify the transferability of this course with the receiving school or institution.

    1) Early Education Curriculum: A Child's Connection to the World, **7th EDITION**

    (The above ISBN# is a bundle with a loose-leaf textbook and an online supplement/access card, which contains videos that will be discussed.)

    2) You will be required to take photographs of activities you create for assignments and upload them into Canvas. Be sure you know how to save your photographs to your computer by the first day of class.

    3) Materials will be needed to create various activities for young children. The cost will vary according to the activity you choose. Instructions will be provided as the semester progresses.

  6. GRADING POLICY

    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

    						90 - 100%	=	A
    						80 -  89%	=	B
    						70 -  79%	=	C
    						60 -  69%	=	D
    					 	 0 -  59%	=	F
    

    GRADES

    ·         10% - (14) Practice Tests—5-10 points each (more than one attempt allowed)

    ·         35% - (8+) Assignments/Activities—100 points each; (12) Discussions--20 points ea.

    ·         55% - (7) Tests – 100 points each

     

    REPONSE TIME FRAME

    1.      Grading Schedule:  Depending on the amount of detail in a written assignment, students can normally expect to have written assignments graded within one to two weeks.  Some assignments will be returned more quickly, especially if the information is needed for a subsequent assignment.  Exams are graded upon submission, so students will be able to see their scores and the questions missed immediately. 

    2.      Course Grades:  Students may view their grades and their current average in class through the Canvas Gradebook, which averages the scores as soon as each grade is posted.  The standard NMJC grading scale is utilized. Midterm and Final Grades can also be seen through NMJC’s T-Bird Web-Portal (see website).

    3.      Canvas Messages (use Inbox) – Students can expect me to reply to Canvas messages within 24 hours, Monday – Friday (noon).

     

    LATE WORK POLICY

    Late work will only be considered under unusual circumstances, deemed unavoidable by the professor, such as an emergency. You should contact me within ONE WEEK of the missed deadline in order to have a late assignment or make-up test considered.  Late work is noted and will NOT be accepted on a recurring basis.

    DROP POLICY

    Please contact me to discuss any concerns you may have about your grade anytime during the semester, or if you are considering withdrawing from the course.  If you find you are unable to complete this course, however, it is the student’s responsibility to withdraw by submitting the proper paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by the deadline, not the instructor’s.  Failure to do so can result in the student receiving an “F” for the course. 

     The preceding information may be adjusted if warranted, at the discretion of the professor, as the semester progresses.

    The Early Childhood Education program at New Mexico Junior College supports NMJC’s mission of “promoting success through learning”. Our goal is to help students become successful teachers or professionals in fields related to working with young children (birth through 8-years-old). The following will be emphasized in this course and throughout the program:
    • Children’s developmental progress toward competence, interdependence, and socialization
    • The nature of the relationship of children and their teacher as an active learning community, connected to the larger community around them
    • The importance of relationships and communication as teachers collaborate with families and children toward academic success
    • Early childhood curriculum which focuses on children as engaged, excited, curious, and intensely involved in learning experiences that are meaningful to them
    • Early childhood environments grounded in reciprocal relationships with caring teachers who provide authentic learning experiences

    Departmental student learning outcomes for this course are:

    • Students will analyze and evaluate oral and written communication in terms of situation, audience, purpose, aesthetics, and diverse points of view.
    • Students will express a primary purpose in a compelling statement and order supporting points logically and convincingly.

  9. SPECIFIC COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

    This course is part of the articulated Universal Catalogue of Courses for Early Childhood Education in the State of New Mexico. The following objectives are taken from the New Mexico State Department of Education’s Common Core Competencies for early childhood professionals (see Common Core Content manual). Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the following competencies at the established level of proficiency:
    • Use appropriate guidance to support the development of self-regulatory capacities in young children. (A.11)
    • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant content for young children and developmentally appropriate ways of integrating content into teaching and learning experiences for children from birth to four (0-4) years of age. (D.1)
    • Demonstrate the integration of knowledge of how young children develop and learn with knowledge of the concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas appropriate for different developmental levels. (D.2)
    • Adapt content to meet the needs of each child, including the development of individualized family service plans (IFSP) or individualized education plans (IEP) for children with diverse abilities through the team process with families and other team members. (D.6)

    Academic Honesty
    Each student is expected to maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity in online academic and professional matters. The College reserves the right to take disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal, against any student who is found guilty of academic dishonesty or otherwise fails to meet these standards. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, dishonesty in quizzes, tests, or assignments; claiming credit for work not done or done by others; and nondisclosure or misrepresentation in filling out applications or other College records. Cheating or gaining illegal information for any type of graded work is considered dishonest and will be dealt with accordingly.

    Attendance Policy and Participation Expectations
    It is expected that you regularly log into class at least three times weekly and check your Canvas mail to ensure you have not missed any changes/updates. Students are expected to complete discussions/quizzes/tests/ assignments before deadlines expire.

    Netiquette
    The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and student behavior within the Canvas course. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to log into the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class and dropped for the semester.     Plagiarism
    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located in Mansur Hall room 123 and 124.

    Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2016. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
